Starter motor stays engaged

I have a 185 (2BBL) GM 262 V-6 1987. While out on the water this weekend, I tried to start the motor and the starter motor wants to stay engaged while cranking. The engine would start, but the starter stays engaged. I would shut it down and try to restart. I had my schematic, and decided to remove the yellow/red wire from the solenoid after cranking and engine start. It seemed to work. I'm assuming the solenoid is malfunctioning. Or is it the starter itself. I know it is WAY cheaper to replace the solenoid, so should it try this first? I have already installed a new ignition switch last year. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

I think he means a bad diode in the alt. causing to to backfeed and keep the motor running.

When I hear GM starter I immediately think of solenoid. This would be the most common issue with it. They are simple to replace with the removal of a few screws once out of the engine.
