NB,
If that is true, then why do we hang ours out in the open for all the world to see and the i/o guys keep theirs covered up in a box? ;) :p

Darren

Small appendage Starcraft brother says what?:D:D

Furthermore who wants to take their best girl out in a smoky, oil misty, boat that sound like a model airplane?:D

PS; Clean your plugs often and always carry spares.

yeah, well, they keep the Hope Diamond in a box too

and there's something about that low thrumming noise that says "REAL BOAT, not water ski toy for kiddies". wish i'd had the guts to do that diesel conversion , as THAT sound really says "real boat"...:D

and El Bwana Grande speaks the truth: no one's spouse likes the smell (or in the case of mine, watching the spreading oil slick) of 2 strokes.

even if we could afford 4 stroke OBs (in which case we'd be on the Bertram or Grady-White forum instead of Starcraft), for boat duty, things that are similar to large stationary industrial engines simply work better and longer than things derived from sportbikes.

so there.

Darren I think they already hate me.

I like how you can often drag an old boat with an outboard out of a field, hook some gas to it and go boating. I do not see that often with an old I/O.

This is my Evinrude after we dragged it home from the PO's house where it had sat for gosh knows how long http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/New Boat/?action=view&current=first_video.flv

From new I think they are equivalent. From used you're probably going to have some maintenance to catch up on. From well used/old, an I/O is a money pit.

Sorry E! I've been over at the boat shop and personally observed the sticker shock for some of the poor soles who had to shell out for a new powerhead. I think some folks are just more comfortable with one or the other.

Clark, sorry about the hijack.

Darren & EZ, for what its worth I'm in your corner. This is the old Ford VS. Chev dissagreement. After 36 yrs owning boats I like the OB better. No, I have never owned an IB/OB, but many friends have. I believe the OB give you a choice of HP and manufacturer where as you get what is installed in a boat made for IB/OB. My old Merc v6 135 will out run any 140 hp IB. Switching out is easier if desired. Yes all will need maintanence and it depends on how you take care of it ( or PO). But my simple question is, if the IB/OB guys prefer their motors why do they RELY on OB kickers for trolling or heaven forbid an emergency backup? Ease of installation, reliabilty, costs, fuel efficiency? Kinda make me go hmmmm:p
I also apologize for the hijack.
Oh and Don, I quit beer a long time ago, but I do like the subjects you chose.

I just did a fairly extensive online price comparison of 4 cylinder I/O long blocks to 4 cylinder outboard powerheads and came up pretty equal. There were places on both sides that were pretty out of line price wise though. Bottom line is, I found that $1800-$2000 could get you a nice rebuilt long block for either one.

The engraver hasn't started the stern of the boat yet!!

I look at it this way - a working something beats a nonworking something else.

My Searay had a OB but had a integral gas tank and oil injection - so it was clean - and nothing beats 2 cycle power. But my Nassau had the plastic gas tanks, mixed oil, the tanks leak, the hoses leak - never going back to that.

As long as they work - they both seem fine to me - although the little 4 banger that does pretty well with the light tinnies would be a dog with a big glasser.

Starmada - been busy - the prestigous award is coming together - I guess you will just have to trust my judgement on what it will be - it will be "Old School" and be nice to have around.
