Drill test holes on the inside of the transom to show the wood condition....... pay particular attention to below the lower mounting holes of the OB and near the drain plug.......

Oh.......... BTW ........... there is no such thing as a free boat.

Great deal on what will be a great boat! That color scheme is kickbutt, you gotta do that to the boat.

CN-If next week is slow could you do 1 showing what my MFG would look like with the shark's mouth that was on my father's P-51 Mustang he flew during WW II? (Only kidding, don't mean to highjack thread!)

Bad transom.. Great news for the weekend.
Cutting the top is not really an option, so I am going to have to figure out what Macgyver would do...I can get to a good majority of it inside.. I'll hopefully be able to do this this weekend..

We'll see..Thanks guys for all the support..At least I know how to cut wood...Fiberglassing will be the learning curve part..

Sooooooo... Who up for coing to the east side of Washington to fix a transom?? huh, huh?? any takers?? is that a no??

Well as said before the transom is soaked and is slowly being cut out. Well, actually the fiberglass I canget to is being cut out. The transom wood is falling to pieces when uncovered. Decapitating would definately be a really good way to do this job, but it is not in my manpower or newbie big brass knockers...So it is slow going. I am hoping to be able to get all the wood out by the end of the week. I have to pull the motor and probably hang it from my engine hoist. I am not going to be able to get the fiber glass out from behind the where the the top dips down to accomodate the motor when it is up. So that wil really be the hard part.. I am off to look for ideas on here..

I think you'll find that most guys that didn't pull the cap wished that they had by the end.

Unfortunatly, I can't do that in Photoshop.

Drink,

When I did my transom, I left the cap on but I cut out the splash well. I then had clear access to the tranosom without dealing with the cap and a misshapened hull for the floor install. It worked out great. When the guts were all back in, I reglassed in the splash well. A little extra work to do the filling and fairing but pretty straight forward. Just an idea.

The Feel bad for FNG post..

The Feel bad for FNG post..

Well, I officially hate my free boat... Ok not completely..With no aid to decapitate I thought a long time about cheating and putting new wood on the inside and fiberglassing it in...
I didn't I climbed underneath and started cutting as much as I could get to. The wood just started falling apart, so no way to make a template off that( I have seen the use cardboard method to make a template so I will have to go that route).
One problem. I cannot get the little bit of wood that is between tub and backarea.. I am pealing away all the other wood, but cannot get to that..
Oh yeah I also found another PITA I think for me problem..
I still need to take off the motor, but while cutting the glass off I notice dust coming from the out side of the boat.. Guess what.. Completely cracked and covered with an aluminum piece is the top of the transom area on the out side..

What the hell am I going to do there after I eventually figure out how to get a transom back in..

You should have removed the motor before tearing the transom apart. That is what holds the motor in place. Its like taking out the motor mounts on your 442 and expecting the radiator hoses to hold the engine in place. ;-)
Im sure you can repair it with fiberglass , but get that motor off yesterday.

You should able to get the last remaining wood out easily once the motor is off.

hahaha, for sure.

Who hasn't gone through this process though, in one form or another.
"Its just a soft spot in the deck,
I'll just patch the stringer ,
transom SOUNDS solid."

Or "I stood on the prop and the transom didn't move".
Yeh because the suspension in the trailer takes it up.
Been there and done all of it. Mine sounded solid and didn't budge, but it was full of mushed black pulp.

If you want to save yourself a ton of time an aggravation, sawzall the dang splashwell OFF, cut it so you get maximum access, it will glass back in place stronger than original anyway. Then just use a wonder bar to rip the rest of the transom out. You can't get a new one in there without removing the splashwell one way or another.

The top of the transom will be fine, make 2 slits and remove the top glass from the transom, toss it out. After the new wood goes in just run some glass tape and resin over it, grind it smooth, paint and reinstall the metal guard. You'll have experience with glass and resin by then, its not a big deal.

Repeat this when you find yourself becoming obsessed, "its just an old boat".
Its hard work being neurotic.:D

I agree with JonesG. If you make a couple of straight cuts on the gunnels forward of the whole splashwell section of the boat, you can remove that easily enough. Then when you put it back, you simply patch in the splashwell and repair the two cuts. The strength from the cap comes with in that whole splashwell area, so you won't be damaging anything structural there. Plus, you'll have full access, and when you put it back on, you'll have an easy piece to fit ( trust me, putting the whole cap back on the boat as one person sucks! I've done it a half dozen times on my boat alone )

Well, I'll see what happens tonight when I do the drill bit test....As for painting it, the wife loves that idea. She wants to have a similiar paint scheme to my '72 chevy cheyenne that is the classic white and orange.

..
Should I have any worry of warpage with all the stringers out for to long.. I have the boat sitting in the trailer.
I am not looking forward to replacing that transom and sqeezing in uder the back to cut it out...

Now you're cooking with gas, Sparky!

I just started reading this thread and when I got to this it hit home. Your wife has a great idea, plus, she is less likely to complain about the time and money when it's her idea.

Well, sorry I haven't replied in 2 weeks. Had a short last minute trip. Dam Air Force, always taking me from my fun..
Any way, before I left I took a couple more pictures of the stern. Looks like it was cut before I got it.. Not sure. I took the trim off and found a split where I could pull out old sealant of some type and see a little bit of the top of the transom.. Plus it looks cracked on the sides..Stress factor rising..

Now from what some of you have told me.. It might be easier to cut the splashwell.. Should I just cut the back and in a little ways so I can get the old wood out and put new in?
I should be able to glass it back, maybe.. Or some kind of filler..
