The blades are bent that is normal. Use a little oil or dish soap to help twist the impeller into the housing. Make the vanes twist the same direction as the old ones.

Re: My impeller dosent fit into the houseing

The fingers need to be bent and forced into the housing. Some use some liquid detergent or grease to help. Sounds like you just bought an impeller w/o instructions and have never done this before. Look in the sticky ToP Secret File for more info.

ditto.....I wouldnt use OIL though...could harm the rubber...use the soap (dawn/ajax) it will wash out in 2 seconds first start......and is super lubey...use it 100% liquid soap...dont add any water....

the impeller is supposed to rub the inside of the housing......that seals it....and helps make the suction...the reason they go bad is that they lose thier flex and dont bounce back (see the old one is still bent up after you took it out)

The instructions for my impeller say to use 30 weight motor oil.....

So what if he put the impeller blades in the wrong way.... wouldn't they just correct themselves? Isn't there enough room in the pump housing to allow for that?

People say that the vanes will correct themselves if put in the wrong direction.
Myself, I have never put one in backwards, so I would not know the results.

I ALWAYS put lite grease inside the pump housing, put impeller on the shaft ,apply downward pressure on the top of the housing ,at the same time rotate the shaft clockwise,I then leave a small space to look and see that the seal didnt fall , .If Im putting a large housing on like a 3 4 or 6 cyl.i put the seal in place with grease or a bit of glue, grease will hold it nicely if the casing is clean ,I make sure every bit of the channel that the seal fits into is packed with grease ,if you rub your finger around it ,its like a pressue that holds it.

the term RUBBER is used in the place of anything that looks similar to RUBBER.

truth is most of what looks like rubber is some other compound, that has way way better properties that old fashioned RUBBER ha ha ha

all the seals made for any tyope of motor or transmission are made from "RUBBER" and they are there to prevent oil leakage or passage..

I would think oil is fine to use on your impeller

Actually, "rubber" is a hydrocarbon and oil or grease will eventually either soften or plasticize it. Vaseline is about as bad for rubber as you can get.

It's almost impossible to toatally prevent oils from reaching the impeller, but there is no good reason to add to the problem.

Soap is good, and silicone grease is used in industrial applications: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicone_grease

I should write to BRP about their faulty instructions for impeller installation, and supply them the link to here.

There does seem to be some controversy over the effect of oil/grease on rubber compounds used in outboards...even seen a few heated exchanges in here...

Given that there is also a recurring mantra that you should change impellers regularly,( some even say annually), that should mitigate the risk of deterioration of the impeller from petroleum based lubes.

Soap works perfectly and we all have some. I'm definately in the soap camp. Why pollute... even a little?

Re: My impeller dosent fit into the houseing

Impellers are typically molded from Buna N or Neoprene, both of which have excellent resistance to oil, greases and other hydrocarbon compounds. Very little these days is made from natural rubber.

Of course, but none of Dupont's Neoprene ads say excellent, they say"good resistance".

A little dish soap to ease it into place and the first start up on the muffs and it's gone.

Re: My impeller dosent fit into the houseing

if oil really did dissolve rubber they would never make O-rings out of the stuff..

it is used as a barrier to oil!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would have to believe that the material used for impellers is impervious to normal oils..like car oil or LU lubricant.

in any case, you could twist an impeller in place with normal garden hose water... spit is even good

good luck

Ky Jelly works well with rubber, and is eco/friendly......:D
