Re: Not running well above 2000 rpms!!

Rodbolt,
I pulled about 200 feet, (seems like) of electrical tape off of the wiring harness and started tracing everything out. Although there were a few branches that went nowhere, like the yellow/red, they all were sealed at the ends. According to my manual everything seems to be going where it should otherwise...

cant see where that yellow red goes that someone spliced and its not supposed to be there..
that yellow loop off the ECU should have NO splices.
its the ECU bypass, unplug it and the ecu is bypassed.
you gots ya a franken motor.
good luck.

Rodbolt,
I cleaned up the wiring a bit, got rid of the extra wires.
I just unplugged the yellow loop wire on the ecu and it fired right up.
As soon as I plug it back in it dies.
What now...
And thanks again for your help

By the way, I traced the alarm back to the pink wire going into the ecu?

Disconnected the white wire from ecu to controll panel, no change, no start.

Hi Jaime
Have you checked the timing, I have a Volvo 3.0 GS and I had a similar problem. After replacing the fuel pump, check the holley 2300 carburator (OK) filters, hoses and a pile of things, finally the problem was the timming it was out.

Thanks, I'll check that out, but I thought I had read that this motor is set timing wise and can not be adjusted. Hell, I don't know, I've read so much about outboards lately my brain is starting to hurt.
Thanks again, I'll check it out..

Check out this wiring color codes to see if it will help.

Like Rodbolt said the ECU is bypassed when you unplug the yellow looped wire and locks the timing at 7.

Something is not giving the ECU the info it needs to run properly or the ECU is bad, is just my thought.

Pick up a manual for motor in the range he gave you and get the test lamp for checking codes. Then you can start testing things

Thanks for that link, it will help, as I have a manual, but the print on some of the wiring schematics is too small to read.

I am not, you just havent posted anything else tested.
your ign timing is not ajustable.

Thanks, I was getting worried. I thought you had dumped me for a younger, more handsom outboard with less problems,,,
Just kidding.

I'll post later with a recap of the issues.

Thanks again

Re: Not running well above 2000 rpms!!

no but I actually do this for a living, there are roughly 450 boats in the marina, not counting the tourists that bring boats on vcation, those that stay tied up in various communities or trailered boats.
there are me and 2 other techs t the marina.
I am rather busy, especially with labor day coming.

Re: Not running well above 2000 rpms!!

Thanks rodbolt, I completely understand..
At this point I don't know what to do, as it does not seem like the yamaha guys with in 150 miles of me know what the hell they are talking about. My fear is that I will take it somewhere and they will just throw parts at it untill they get it running. ($$$$$$$$$$$)
Here is where I am right now.
The motor will only start for a split second if at all.
If I disconnect the 14 pin below the ecu it will start, shuts off as soon as it is plugged back in.
I by passed the dead man switch, (on the recommendation of a yamaha mechanic) no help.
Visually checked all the gounds, all looked good.
Dont know where to go next,
I know rodbolt always says to put the wire cutters down, but I am seriously thinking about ripping everywire out of this boat and start over.
Question,
How do I isolate the motor from the boat to figure out if my problem is in the motor, or in the wiring of the boat/console?

Re: Not running well above 2000 rpms!!

have you tested the alarm horn?
turn the key on,remove the pink temp switch bullet conector, ground the harness side pink to ground. horn should sound.

Sorry if I didn't reiterate that in my last post.
The horn is going at all times with the key on. Have not been able to figure out why,,

How did you bypass the kill switch?
Is it still bypassed?

Hopefully you did not jump the connections together.

Re: Not running well above 2000 rpms!!

when mine goes off, the pink wire controls it so I plug and unplug the bullets connecting each part of the pink wire to fine the problem. The pink wire grounds and the alarm goes off. So find where the pink is grounding and you find the problem. Hope this helps
