I want to make an offer on this 97 bayliner. Seen here. http://www.boattrader.com/listing/1997-Bayliner-2050-SS-Special-Edition-97147189

I did NADA And just randomly threw some stuff together and came out with this, but honestly. I don't know what I'm doing so I'm posting here for some advice.

I need to know if the numbers listed below are even accurate, as again I don't have alot to go on and just made random standard assumptions. I'm guessing I'm wrong. Anyways, on the pricing below I have to be missing something or that boat is grossly over priced.

If you can actually buy that boat for what NADA is saying, I would jump on it. Visually it looks in perfect shape, but you would need a water test.

Much as I hate to admit it, summer and boat season end time for us snowbelters is coming. Once Labor day goes by, the chances this boat will sit on the lot all winter increase. So if you otherwise like the boat, don't be afraid to make a lowball offer. They may budge on price to get it off their inventory. Never hurts to try.

Not sure these figures include a trailer.

No they wouldn't. So I figure 7500 with trailor is NADA. I live in Iowa, not many boats for sail here, so I would be willing to offer 8200. Not sure I would want to go higher.

If you like it alot, start off by offering that total NADA value with Trailer. Then go up to the 8200. Worse comes the worse then say no. Who knows it you might get suprised and get it even lower. :)

I would make a lowball offer. The season is more than half over, the industry is hurting all boating outlets, the economy is still looking iffy, and as clean as this is, it's still a 13 year old boat! Plus, you are already going to see it be considered a 14year oldboat shortly! Factor in the cost for winterizing and storing very soon, which is an added cost without the real benefit of time enjoyed in the season prior. The seller sould understand his price should be dropped aste months have passed. Was this the same price at the beginning of the season? I would attempt to find out first, so you have an even better argument....

I'd start the offer around $5000 including the trailer and work your way up from there... If you're gonna low-ball, you gotta LOW-ball... They may be tired of seeing this boat and having it take up space on their lot and want to get rid of it... The worst thing that they can do is counter-offer...

Re: Boat's been sitting around at a semi local dealership Need help

That certainly is a good looking boat. I love the way those Bayliner hulls look. if it is in good shape floor and transom wise (These boats have a tendency to have rot issues) I would say that is easily a $7,500 boat in my area with a good running Mercruiser 3.0 and alpha one drive. This boat has the V8 and that is going to push the asking price up.

That being said I would Lowball an offer and go from there feel out what they want for the boat. What can they say. I lowballed the heck out of my boat and I was told basically That there wasn't a chance they would let the boat go for what I offered. I ended up getting a decent boat at the just below average cost with a Bimini top included and several hundred dollars worth of work for free. You never know.

I wouldn't think they would get the asking price for it though. Make an offer after you have it checked for rot. Take a wood mallet with you and bounce around on the floor. better yet have it surveyed I looked at some nice looking Bayliners with some pretty spongy floors. Humidity + Summer Thunderstorms + Neglect = Rotting Bayliner in my area.

Bayliners are a decent boat if you take good care of them. keeping an older Bayliner Dry is the key to longevity.

You might want to rerun that NADA #, too. You try going in with paperwork that says jet drive, when it's IO, you might lose credibility. ;)

Looks very nice, has 5.7, Hours ?

Boats ARE expensive in Iowa, but in todays market, $6500 - $8000 tops

Try 7g, work up to 8000 if needed.

no idea on hours, but I weigh 260lbs. I figured if I walked on it I would be able to tell if the floors were rotted out? do I really need a wood mallet?

No you don't really need a wood mallet. But it is a handy item to have when checking out a boat for rot. Tap the floor in the corners by the engine bay and the rear corners of the boat where water would normally accumulate. Like I said before, the older Bayliners have a reputation for being neglected or stored in a less than desirable manner and that ads up to rotted floors. This boat looks like it is in great shape but The dealer most certainly has cleaned it up.

Thats the biggest concern that I would have with that boat looking at it from here. It also depends on how much you want to spend as well.

I dislike the whole carpet thing though. seems to me that carpet would = moisture which would attract woodrot.

Basically we are looking for a bowrider/runabout that holds 6 people comfortably, and has the power to pull a skier/tuber effectively and has the bench with a sun pad. Not many meet this requirement in iowa. You find alot of smaller 17-18ft glastron type boats or older 90's 80's and they still ask 6k for them around here...

Short drive up to MN or WI would increase your options greatly.

I have, I figure 8k is a solid offer, and if its not accepted I won't haggle. i'll just wait for fall to come when everyone wants to offload and not many are buying as many don't want to store it.

This. And that's including trailer and all taxes, tags, crap fees, junk fees, garbage fees and fee fees.

Why start the bidding at $8k? That's barely under the sticker price. They may not cave now, but in another month or two they'll be calling you.

Those NADA values may not mean much; they may reflect wholesale auction prices in an economically depressed part of the country. Up here, no one in their right mind would sell a boat like that for five or six thousand bucks.

It does look like a nice boat, although you must remember that a Bayliner is not quite a SeaRay or other higher end boat. What you need is a thorough inspection of the boat and the motor. If it checks out, make them an offer that you are comfortable with and see what happens.

I like Bayliners personally, but I'd consider (a) whether I want people looking down their nose at me for owning one, and (b) resale value/ease of resale.
