I hope someone can help. I just got a Baretta 185 Success with a Volvo AQ131D. The previous owner said the engine over heated and it blew a frost/core/freeze/soft plug and they shut it off and haven't used it since. The mentioned that they had just put a new water pump on it prior to this happening and they also said that the thermostat may have stuck closed.
I started the engine today and it started fine. How tough is it to change a core plug? How many are there? I can see 4 but all seem to be fine. What is the best way to check this thing out to see what is wrong. I have never owned a boat and may be over my head. I know some about car repair but just enough to diagnose the problem and not enough to fix it. Don't mean to ramble and hope someone out there in the virtual world can make some sense of this and give me direction. Thanks in advance.

So did you find the bad Core plug?

In my opinion, your going to have to go over this boat top to bottom.

Overheated and popped a core plug??? Haven't heard of that happening.

You're going to need a manual for your motor and outdrive as well as some tune up tools like a timing light, dwell meter etc.

Anyway, nice to see another Baretta owner on the boards.

If you want to do this on your own we will try to help you along but you're the one working on it.;)

Welcome to Iboats, BTW.:)

That system only has a 4lb cap on it, I don't see how it could have blown a casting plug from overheating.

Fill it up with coolant and see where it runs out.

I am going to get some earmuffs and get it running this evening. The oil is clean and I don't see any evidence of leaks. I agree, I have never heard of a core plug popping due to overheating.
I have a bad feeling that I am going to find a cracked block, but we'll see. I will post again when or if I can trace the leak.

Thanks
