Hey everyone. Winter is strolling along. We had a couple of blizzards which gave us a couple feet of snow. Then it warmed up for a bit and rained for a bit. Now the snow is gone and I'm getting shack wacky. I've decided to get another motor my Gypsy. My 850 is sick, I believe a crack in the block. My 650 is tired. It works okay but lacks power and compression is all over the place. Who said this boating stuff is fun?:facepalm: I am going Saturday to a young fella who has a Merc tower of power he is selling. I was looking at it today and it's a nice motor. The cowl colours suggest it's a 1983 model year. The owner tells me it's an '85 year model. The serial number tell me it's a 1987 year model. It once had oil injection that was removed. I have no issue with that. He's only owned for 2 years. Cleaned the carbs, replaced jets. Compression is 132-135 in all cylinders. I just get suspicious when cowls are changed over the years. I don't know. Probably over analyzing. So we are going to fire that bad boy up on Saturday. If it starts good, run good, I'm gonna get it. It's got the controls, power trim and two stainless steel props. :joyous:

I decided to back out of the deal. The serial number on the block and transom mount didn't match. 1500 is too much for a Frankenstein. I have to follow my gut.

Well, after searching and placing ads, so much junk out there. I think I found a good motor for the Gypsy. It's a 1989 Evinrude 100hp XP. All numbers are good and this is suppose to be a one owner, low hour motor. I was loading on my truck and buddy said I have one more thing that goes with the motor. He comes out wit a mint 20" Raker stainless prop. Very cool.

That should be a beast for that boat. It might even be able to turn that Raker prop with it. Gonna need your expert repainting skills though.

Yeah, it will need some attention on the paint. But that will be for another day. I do like the colours. Evinrude always had good looking outboards.
