Do I need a special tool to remove the prop?

I have ran the motor with muffs on in the yard in neutral. Can you also put the motor in gear while you are using the muffs or is it bad to have the prop rotate out of the water?

Can I take the prop off and put it into forward and reverse?

I want to test a new lower unit install.

Thanks for the help,
ScAndal

ScAndal, You do not need a special tool to remove the prop. You need to bend the spider washer's "legs" up to clear the splined washer, and remove the propnut. I use a 2X4 between the prop blade and the zinc anode and housing to hold the prop while I loosen it.

You can put the motor in gear while running on the muffs. If the prop is on it is much more dangerous than if it has been removed. Also, don't rev the motor too much without a load on it!

Warning: Becarful when you bend the spider waher tabs up straight, if you use a screwdriver on the tab and against the prop hub you can crack the hub on the prop.

Scandal, You must be careful when putting into gear with the muff on, if the water pipe get tangle with the prop many nasty things came happen. That is why it is advisable not to put it into gear and if you have to, do it slowly and like chris1956 said "If the prop is on it is much more dangerous than if it has been removed. Also, don't rev the motor too much without a load on it!" When I take mine off I use a socket 1 1/16" to unscrew the nut but you have to straighten the spider washer first.

Awesome information guys, thanks so much. When I put the prop back on, should I lube it? If so, why type of oil should I use?

Thanks again,
ScAndal

always lube the prop shaft. mercury recommends either anti-corrosion grease, special lube 101, or 2-4-c marine lube with teflon.

Scandal,a few tips for you when running on muffs.Always turn the water on first and then start the motor and make sure you turn the motor off before the water is turned off .Also it is a safe practice to push an ice pick through the rubber part of the muffs opposite side of the water inlet.Push it while it is in place until the pick enters the intake vent.this will hold it there and prevent it from sliding off .If it slides off you will need to replace the impeller. If it slides off and you dont notice it right away you will really be in trouble.Charlie

Is the spider washer reusable once it is bent for prop removal?

When bending for removal, are you guys saying to bend it out so that it is flat?
