how many have switched from an exhaust bellow to a tube?
what are your experiences?

did a full bellows job a few weeks ago and the exhaust bellow came off the outdrive side while out on the water for the first time (couple weeks back). I ran the rest of the day with it disconnected on that side and had no real issues (except a good amount of exhaust residue on the transom of the boat)

a week ago, I managed to get it back on (without removing the outdrive) and it held fairly well. knowing that we will be on the lake again this weekend, I raised the outdrive for the last two days to leave pressure on the exhaust bellow (to see if it would come off again....it did today. noticing that I could have slid it on further before clamping it, I put it back on again tonight. If it falls off again, screw it time for a tube.

what I really want to know is how well does it work as far as directing the exhaust through the prop? I don't want that exhaust residue build up every time I take it out (like when the bellow fell off).

you will get the residue at idle speeds because the prop does not create enough vaccuum to draw the exhaust through the drive

also, the residue is a sign of a rich running carb, need of tune-up, etc...

last year I got heavy carbon build up when my fuel pump started leaking (through the site tube into the carb). fixed the pump. no residue. New plugs, wires, cap this year and checked timing. no residue

bellow fell off, residue (carbon build up) - I believe its really the design of my transom and swim platform. the outdrive is formed into the swim platform/transom and when at idle it was collecting the exhaust that was being released higher up.

so I guess the real question would be - at idle with the drive half way up (within range) will the exhaust go through the leg our seep out?

BTW...It is called a "bellows" (yes, even just one, singular, like a fireplace bellows). "Bellow" is the sound you make when you are replacing one! (ref: google).

Mostly thru the leg.

Mostly thru the leg.

actually it will mostly seep out and cause residue, agian as i stated above there is not enough vaccuum created by the prop at idle to draw exhaust gasses through the drive
