Model number is J30ELES

When in no wake zones or when trying to dock then engine will act like its loading up and die. Sometimes even idling in neutral for more than a min will cause it to die. You can usually tell its coming as the engine will start to bog. Then it will start right back up, but not as easy as if you shut it off.

sometimes on cold starts it spits and sputters a bit when on high idle, but other than that seems to run pretty good.

Anything I can check or try, or should I just buy rebuild kits and rebuild the carbs and go from there?

Are you running the correct plugs, are they gapped properly?
Have you tried adjusting the low speed needle valve?
How is the compression and spark?

Haven't really looked into it much yet. I hope to find time to get the boat to my house this week so I can start working on it

Hopefully i will be able to get the boat to my house today. are the carbs on these engines pretty simple? I've never worked on an outboard, but i've rebuilt numerous car, and dirt bike carbs

The carb is pretty simple. You can find the carb diagram on marineengine dot com. But as Daviet suggested, a simple carb needle adjustment may be all that's needed.
Is this a new to you motor?

I got the boat late in the season last year, so i dumped it in the water and went. The previous owner is a friend and he said it never did that to him the year before.

Is there a thermostat installed ?---What are the results of a compression test.

IDK on either

I have a feeling the compression is fine as cold starts are no problem for it, and it does idle good for 15 seconds of so, its more like the engine loads up after low to idle rpm for extended time. It also revs great and you can go from idle to WOT with no hesitation, and it feels nice and strong for a 30hp pushing a 24ft boat lol

where would the thermostat be?

alright, so i got a chance to take a look at the engine and of course the rain moved in before i could start it. I am a bit confused though. trying to follow the carb adjustment procedure here

http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...sorted-carb-variations-by-joe-reeves?t=167352

my carb has the single screw setup correct? all i seen was one screw that was near the top of the carb behind the throttle plate, also there is some sort of jet on the top of the air inlet, that is a jet and not another adjustment right?

one last thing, do these engines have some sort of sound deadening material under the hood? looks like there is old adhesive and foam remnants under the hood

Well it took about a full turn CCW on the screw, but it seems to be idling like a champ now. I let it idle for about 3 mins then hit it WOT and it didnt skip a beat
