Down load the manual in the link below. Probably going to need some major work by the looks of it

Totally different system than a Merc. You've got a trim motor on the front/bottom of your engine, and you've got a tilt motor on the inside of the intermediate housing of your drive (at the transom, passenger side, inside the boat).

Get a manual, you're going to need to look at how yours works. Start by figuring out which of your controls is tilt (back motor raises and lowers the drive for trailering/running) and which is trim (front motor changes the aspect of your entire drive - engine and all - vs the boat). Then you'll need to start figuring out power to 'em. There's some solenoids that are in the control path of those two motors.

You have what's called Selectrim in the front of the engine(hydraulic) and a mechanical tilt at the drive. You need to find an OMC manual for this system. I am wondering if anyone has come up with a good way to manually set that trim to a good spot and leave it. It was a half *** way of trying to get OMC stringers to have a trim and it was pretty bad.

I would probably just yank it all out and get the regular motor mounts.

Yea its a pain since day 1, i was told that there were releys for that right next to the starter relay on top of engine towards the back, the throttle lever that moves the propller up and down makes noise it just needs some lube since i changed out the pump,, its the other one the one i have to move when loading and unloading that i have no clue on were to begin the relays for that spefic componet arent even clicking like there no power getting to it,, i been looking for a repair manuel but i have yet to find one... :blue::blue::faint2::faint2:

I've actually had mine sittin' about center of the jack screw since I bought the boat. It works well enough that way. My motor isn't working right, and was workin' on other stuff first. If I can rebuild that motor cheap this year, I'll probably try to make it work. Otherwise, it's stayin' put.

Siego - do a Google search for OMC shop manual (sorry I can't figure out how to put a link on the forums right now  ). You'll find one out there. Go for the actual shop manual as opposed to the repair manuals - it'll be helpful in the long run.

On the tilt, are you getting a solenoid "click" when you hit the button? There's a chance you have more problems in the motor than in the electrical.

A '78 should be hydro-mechanical shift. '77 was the last year of electric shift. I forget all of the differences (I've never had anything besides the electric shift), but if yours was electric shift you'd see shift wires entering into the intermediate housing on the port (passenger) side of the engine. Whatever gear lube the local shop has should be fine, 80w90 is the typical.

If you do happen to have an electric shift, the only difference is in your lower unit you would need Type C, upper and intermediate would still be the typical stuff.

My omc trim was bad when I first got it... Mine the motor was bad. To cheat till I could fix it. I took the shaft out of the bad motor and stock it in my makita.... I was able to adjust the trim this way good enough to get on plane. Left it there till I got a new motor... Thus us a good temp fix till you can do it right! I do agree. Purchase the omc manule it will help you out a ton. I used mine and rebuilt the complete upper. The trim motor. The tilt system and replaced the motor! The book was dead on... Saved a ton on having it done!
