I have a carbed 502, fuel pump died on me last weekend. It's the mechanical style that runs off the water pump. I have a replacement pump and the job seems simple enough, but I've never done it before. Can you give me a quick walkthrough of the job? Any tips/problems I need to avoid while installing the new pump?
Thanks!
Did the job on both my boats, they to have the pumps mounted to the sea water pump. It's real simple and is accomplished just as it looks like, other then draining of the gear lube. Remove the fuel lines, unbolt the pump and install another, then reconnect.
Look in my signature to find where I discuss the pump. Your pump has either one or two plugs in it. It it has two this will be great, pull the top plug first to see if anything comes out. Your pulling the top plug to see if gas has been leaking into the lube area. If a little bit or fluid come out then only a little bit of gas has gotten in, and in that case it's normal. Of it come flooding out then a whole lot of gas has entered and I would suggest further inspection of the pump and seal areas. Once fuel pump is back on the housing, put the bottom plug back in, then fill housing up with Merc HP drive lube, or equivilent, to the top whole. When it starts coming out stop and wipe off excess then reinstall the top plug. Plugs will have a gasket and generally can be reused. If replacement is needed, they are the same ones used in the outdrive.
When you do yearly winterization, remember to pull top plug and check for dilution of gear lube. If you see evidance, drain and refill
Good luck
