Can you replace a 898 for 888 outdrive

My other post about my outdrive.... 1981 MC-1 898 Merc outdrive....replacing ujoints and seals...not sure but my upper housing case may be shot. Still no answer.


Found some out drives on CL

888 MC-1 outdrive 1.50 gears.......will this replace my 898. Im thinking the only difference is 888 is ford and 898 is chevy.
He also has a 233 M/R Drive...will this work?

Ayuh,.... The 898, 'n 888 are the same drive, the 233 might be a taller ratio, or not,...

Standard 233 ratio was 1.32:1....

Correct. 888 was a Ford 302, I think 898 was a Chevy 305. Both are 1.50 ratios. The 233 was a 1.32 ratio for the Ford 351w. You'd have to re-prop if you are going to use that outdrive.
