I've been searching for a decent used outboard for my 1998 xpress h51
But have been coming up empty handed. Where do you guys find these at?? I basically live out in the sticks so there is no place around for hours where I could even look. Are there places out there that would ship a motor to me?? I am looking for a 70-90hp 1980-1995ish without spending an arm and a leg.

Best bet in my book would be to contact a friend in a high use boating area and ask him to do the shopping and test.

I would never buy a used engine in the blind.

Unfortunately that's getting down to my only option. If anyone lives in any high boating places and that knows of any outboards for sale in the range i'm looking for let me know.

You might want to consider a remanufactured outboard. These folks have a good reputation and ship nationwide.

I have bought small outboards on ebay, with just a photo, but have been disappointed each time because the seller overstates the condition.
I fix them up, but these are relatively cheap compared to what you are looking for. I think I would agree with R Davis and Solittle above, and get a warranty.

I assume from the year of the motor, that you are looking for something in a price range of $500-$2000. At that price, the shipping costs for a motor can be so high that it isn't worth doing. Also with motors of that age, you are going to get something as is, or at best a motor that has been checked out and is running right now....but that doesn't mean it will run in a week's time.

You could try smalloutboards.com. Your bet is ebay - but only buy from someone who has lots of good feedback - and as SolingSailor points out, buying an item like this can be a crapshoot. I don't know how remote you are - if you are in a remote region of Alaska, then travelling to a larger center won't work. If you are several hours from a major city, then your best bet is, next time you are making a trip in, to go through craigslist to see what is available.
