I have an I believe 1964 3hp Evinrude. It had been sitting for years and I knew that the carb needed to be rebuilt. I rebuilt the carb and found out it was seized up. After soaking for a few days It broke free. I have lots of spark but it will not pick up gas. It barely fires on starting fluid. With the carb off I pulled it over and there was little to no suction in the carb opening. I am wondering about stuck reed valves or a seal. I am hoping for some advice on what to check for next.

If you already have the carb off, pull the reed plate and take a look.

Good luck!

i would do a proper compression test on it before anything else......not the ol thumb over the plughole deal!!

I didn't say I stuck my thumb over the plug holes. The intake hole where the carb bolts to the crank case. I'm wondering if there should be a fair amount of suction through that hole.

cedar, I don't think nw was impling that you had stuck your thumb over the plug holes, I think he was saying not to do that and call it good. I think it is fair to say he was saying that you use a compression tester to do it properly. If you have really low compression that could be one of the reasons it will not draw in fuel.

Yup Low compression. 5 pounds in the bottom cylinder 55 in the top. It was seized up so I am thinking stuck rings. I am going to take it apart to see how bad it is. How much compression should that motor have?

ahem...lol. it should have a minimum of 60psi in either hole with no more than %10 difference between them for smooth running.

Thanks nw......Would you recommend a complete rebuild since i will have it completely apart anyway. I haven't checked on parts pricing and availability yet.

Those motors were built for many years.---Lots of good used parts available.---Most consumable items are readily available new as well.----Check out ----aomci----and find parts there.

Thanks racerone. I will check that site out. The rings are completely froze on one piston and half a ring was loose on the other. I got them soaking in some ATF and Acetone. The cylinders look real good

those motors are as rugged as they come......if no rings or lands are broken. a bit of time and patience is well worth it. just dont go spending dollars on a dead horse (jmo). a used short block from aomci or another good source ( doug penn etc ect) ends up being cheaper than a rebuild. jmo

I put new rings and gaskets in. I previously rebuilt the carb. I have compression, spark fuel to the carb. It still will not run. It will fire if I squirt gas into the carb. I don't know what else to check for.
