1992 40HP Tracker made by Johnson. Were they a sub Standard Johnson?

The Cowling says Johnson Tracker. So are these real Johnson motors or are there a difference between a motor marked only Johnson and made by Johnson or a Johnson made for Tracker?

Another question the person says it will not shift into reverse but Forward and Neutral work fine? Any thoughts on this?

And the compression for both cylinders is 140 which sounds good.

With the above information what would a motor in this condition be worth or even worth messing with? Thank You.

It was custom ordered for the TRACKER boat company.----------Cosmetics is the only difference.

Disconnect the remote control shift cable from the motor and see if the motor itself will shift. That will narrow it down, motor trouble or control trouble.

Agreed, it is a Johnson with Tracker cosmetics. Certainly not sub-standard

It is not mine. I am looking to purchase a 40 or 50 HP Outboard for my Boat I am going to build. So I was going to call this person later today to ask about it. But I feel he is asking too much $425.00 as it sits. I am pretty good mechanically but know almost Zero about Outboards at this point other than the large amount of information I have been reading here and googling and you tube. So I was wondering if it is even worth messing with.

You pays your money and you takes your chances when buying any used motor. At least the guy is honest enough to admit up front that there is a potential problem. $425 could be a good buy, and it might be buying a waste. Does it have a stainless steel prop on it? That alone is worth some money.

I do not know about the Prop. But it does come with one. Here is what the Add Says.

1992 Johnson 40 hp motor for sale. The motor runs good. The compression is 140 on both cylinders. The lower unit will not shift into revers. Foward and neutral work fine. The power head is in good shape. All the parts are there. I can put the calings back on if you want. I also have a prop for the motor. Please call or text me with any questions.

I have been trying to find a decent Motor in the 40 to 50 HP Range preferably 50 HP and from what I know about Motor brands I am looking for an Older Johnson or Evinrude. But all I keep running across are flakes and people that can not find or supposedly lost the title to the motor. I am currently hoping that a 1986 Evinrude 50 HP works out with his paper work. But I have found that honest people are almost extinct.

Just remember, you need the remote control to run the motor. Seems like everybody these days are learning that too late.

Thank You all for the information but the Motor was sold.

But it did answer a question that was bugging me about motors such as the Johnson but with Tracker badges on them and the like.

Many (most ?) states don't title outboard engines.

But I have found that honest people are almost extinct.

Well, maybe honest people who happen to be trying to sell an outboard engine.

At a minimum drain a small amount of oil from the gearcase to check for water, then have the seller demonstrate the engine running on a hose, watch it shift into forward and reverse, and do a compression test and spark test. Better yet would be a lake test. Another option is to find a marine dealer who could check the engine out for you, they could probably do it for a one hour shop charge.
