5.7 GL, penta SX cobra outdrive, neutral question

I have a 98 wellcraft Eclipse 2000 SS and have a question about the shift/throttle control. The manual and design of the shifter is that you push a button and pull the control mechanism out to put the entire system into free rev or neutral. Problem is, it doesn't. I can push the button, pop the unit out, and it stays in gear. Ideas on what to check? Aside from this, everything else works well with the engine and shift mechanism.

Ayuh,.... I'd start by squirtin' oil into anywhere, 'n everywhere ya can on the controller,....
