I just purchased a '64 Evinrude 5.5 hp Fisherman, model 5402B and the choke knob is missing. By looking at other peoples pictures of this engine it should have a white choke knob with a T handle. The part number from the manual is 205280. I ordered one but it will not work as it has 2 points sticking out of the side and will not go through the cowling hole. The one I received is black with a round knob. It turns out that there are 3 different choke knobs made with the same exact part number stamped into them, 2 are black with round knobs and one white with a T handle. My research shows that only the 1964 model used this particular knob. Has anybody else ran across this or does anybody know where I can get the right knob? Oh, and this same knob is not used on the Johnson 1964 5.5 (unbelievable).

205280 is the correct part number for your motor. I'm surprised that there are others with the same number on them. But it just goes to show that you can't rely on the casting numbers stamped on parts. Someone obviously did, when they sent you the wrong part. Yes, yours is supposed to have a T handle.

Well, here are the 3 with the same part numbers. The white one has ears or tabs sticking out and I don't know this would fit in my square hole and bushing in the cowl. Unfortunately I don't have another one to look at or even a picture where I can see the rod installed.
For some reason my photo will not load?

At least I now see why you have three with the same part number. They used the same mold to make all three, but modified it at the knob end. Cheaper than making a complete new mold. Those injection molds cost an unbelievable fortune to make. I know, I've bought a few.

It looks like the ears are different on the white one. Maybe they can be depressed?

Im surprised that it will not fit through the cowl, I would have thought that the only difference would be colour and knob end? Ill dig through parts bins and see if I can help.
