Mercruiser shifting - does this sound OK

After having trouble with the drive going into forward gear, I went through the shift cable adjustment process several times using both the factory manual and a couple of the YouTube videos. I think I've got it as good as I can get it. However, there is a grinding "zing" sound going into forward and going into reverse. Maybe I'm just hearing this and noticing it so much because I've got the boat on the trailer and not in the water.

Does this shift to forward and then shift to reverse sound OK to the experts here?

Thanks very much.

Sounds like it is being shifted out of the water, with no resistance from the water the gears will not lock in and results in the chatter. Bet it will sound just fine in the water.

You are not shifting fast enough.
+1 to both of these comments. A swifter shift engagement should help reduce some of that sound while both in and out of the water.

Shift faster. Basically, my thought is to push it quickly into forward gear, and don't go slowly. If it still does it, then I would do a shift cable adjustment to make sure you are adjusted properly, then see if it fixes the problem.

If it still does it after checking the adjustment , you may have to adjust the throw on the shift cable linkage on top of your engine. It's that little slot on the linkage arm. You can slide the shift cable over at 1/8" increments to increase the throw in the reverse direction. If you do this though, you need to adjust the turns of the barrel on the linkage to get a good positive engagement in forward gear first. Then adjust the throw 1/8" at a time to increase the throw in the reverse direction. This will make sure you get proper engagement in reverse after the forward travel has been already set.
