65 evinrude ski twin, bang.

Hey guys, After all the work I did on my ski twin 33 she has been running like a champ all summer. A few weeks ago I took her out in Lake scugog and a ton of weeds kept gumming up the prop. I would throw it into reverse and forward gear to clear the prop and get rolling. When I was docking I noticed that the engine now knocks hard randomly when under any kind of speed in gear. Example, starts and runs perfect in neutral, put it in gear and she will get up on a plane and just randomly bang hard like it's slipping. Is it possible that the damn weeds killed my clutch dog? Yikes.

Likely all the shifting you did damaged your clutch dog....Fix it before it takes out the gears as well.

So its sounds like the damn dog again? Sigh... thats a 90 dollar part. I'll have to open it up to find out I guess.

As suggested, that is more likely the root cause rather than the weeds themselves.
Better to take an extra minute and clear the weeds by hand. (...with the engine stopped. )

Well I took her over to a marina quickly and he's pretty sure the gears are to blame. II'll have to open it up and see if it's got some rounding going on. There's a machine shop near my place I could probably get it cleaned up at if that is the problem.

No doubt about it that is the clutch dog. So you have replaced it recently?? How was the forward gear? It is a waste of money to put a new dog against a worn gear. It won't last long. Another thing: They may send you the updated clutch dog with ramps inside. With the ramped dog, it would be well worth your time to have the prop shaft drilled and install the detent balls and spring that came out in ~1967-ish. But don't try to drill the shaft yourself unless you are experienced in drilling stainless steel. It will work harden and you will never get through it. Best take it to a machine shop and have them drill it on their Bridgeport.

I did replace the clutch dog back in 2013 and there's barely 40 hours on it

Something is causing such premature failure. That thing should go many years with proper care and correct shifting procedure. I must have shifted my motors back and forth a zillion times in Florida water weeds, and have never worn out a clutch dog.....yet. Maybe my day is coming. (Well maybe not a whole zillion).
