Put an "dont scold" 1406 Eldebrock on 4.3. rejetted to .089 primary .092 secondary pink spring 68X57 rod. Took out to run and two barrels worked fine. When I got into the four barrels it would labor. Now discussed I opened the cowling and removed the air cleaner to watch the secondaries opening or lack there of. To may surprise the engine runs fine even in the four barrels with the spark arrestor off. Am going to put an aftermarket air cleaner and rejet the secondaries to .089. Will repost more and let anyone know the outcome.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Whatever ya put on there, it can be an air cleaner,... But,.....

It's Got to be a Flame Arrester, 1st,....

I don't remember my jettin', nor which needles, 'n springs I settled on,...
But I'm runnin' the Merc equivalant to yer carb, with the stock flame arrester, with No problems, what so ever,...

Just one little problem. A 1406 is an automotive carb, and has none of the safety items a 1409 MARINE carb has. Even if you do get it to run right, it's still unsafe.

Just saying.

More info. This boat origionally had a 3.8 185hp mercruiser, cracked block.. Pulled the 3.8 engine and put in the 4.3 with roller comp cam .500 lift 110 lobe seperation angle, power range 1200-4500. It seems odd but I am 30 cu bigger and more lift on the cam, maybe the flame arrestor is not big enough.

Is any of the carb linkage coming in contact with the flame arrester?

Your getting a bog at the power end thats a 600 cfm carb that your trying to make into a 500cfm..... try this 098 x 095 073 x 047 orange spring 5"hg or leave the jets at 98 x 95 and change the rods and springs to 075 x 047 yellow springs 4"hg.better fuel economy
