Ok...for those of you who read my previous post...I have now done more work.

I pulled the tank and drained it out....cleaned it...all that jazz... i put new fuel in it, new fuel filters, and it still ran the same...i put some sea foam in the tank, carb, and oil...it seems to run a little better now...i'm quite sure the carb needs to be rebuilt.

There is a yellow colored hose running from the upper left side of the carb to the bottom side of the fuel pump...what is this hose exactly? Anyways, it was gunked up with some thick stuff and while i did clean it, i imagine the rest of the stuff is still as gunked up...so thats my next thing to try...rebuilding and cleaning out the carb.

New question: When my outdrive is all the way up or down (or close to it) it makes a noise in which it sounds like the internal gears are under a lot of stress...is that normal and if not, does anyone have any idea what that might be?

Thanks for all of your help!!!!,

Harley

oh yeah...there is this inlet/outlet piece where the fuel line hooks to the tank pick up...it has a spring loaded ball in it that seems to move freely, but when i try to blow through it, it takes a lot of strain to get a little air moving through it...is that normal?

-h

Thats the fuel pump vent hose. It allows one side of the pump diaphram to vent to atmosphere while redirecting and containing fuel if the diaphram should leak. Without the hose a ruptured diapram would spill fuel into the bilge through the vent connection. The hose should move air freely and be dry, fuel in the hose indicates a bad pump.
You may have bad u-joints. With the drive full up you'll have some slight noise but with the drive nearly down you shouldn't. Pull the drive and check them and while you got the drive off check the gimbal bearing.
Re: NEW INFO ON MY 1983 MERCRUISER 120 - HELP!

There wasn't any fuel in the tube...just some sort of thick build up...dry not wet...

As for the u-joints...this noise is when its in neutral so would the u-joints apply at that time?

How hard is it to pull the outdrive and will i need any special tools?

Thanks,
Harley

i have the service manual for the motor already...thanks for the post though :) .

Bump for the question of whether or not the noise would be u-joint related when the boat makes the noise in neutral...

If the engine is running the U-joints are turning. The Forward/reverse clutches are all located in the lower unit.
