So I rekitted my water pump. I noticed one strange thing in the kit and that was that the long, branched seal that goes into the plastic pump housing round the cup seemed like a loose fit compared to the old one. I went with it anyhow and got outboard back together. It pumps great a heap of water comes out the pee tube but water also comes out of the relief hole about 1/2 way up the leg so there must be a seal issue? What's the most likely cause of the leak?

Not sure what hole you are talking about. The ones by the lower motor mount? That would be normal. The exhaust relief holes on the rear, a few inches below the powerhead? Also normal.

Are you running it in a barrel or on the hose? You really should run in a barrel to test the water pump,
as the water pressure from a hose would overtake the water pump.
I have mine running in a barrel in this video. Is it spitting water out the back of the leg?

its water running out of a hole on the front side of the leg out the hole above where the rubber mount bolts to the leg (not the exhaust relief side, other side of the motor. I pulled the gearcase checked the pump replaced a seal I was worried about, others and impeller gaskets stainless plate cup housing etc are all good, they are brand new. I pulled the copper tube that runs from the pump, straightened it a little (it was bent) which made it longer fitted everything back together fired it up really strong pee but still water coming from that hole I just don't recall ever seeing that before, perhaps it is normal?

Yes, I'm familiar with the relief hole you're referring to. I have noticed a little water from there, but it didn't raise a concern as I knew my engine was being cooled. I think you will see more coming from there if you're running on muffs/hose, as the water pressure is greater.

I can't see your motor, but if it were pumping good water from the pee hole and out the exhaust I wouldnt worry. You can also measure the temperature on the cylinder head for extra peace of mind too. Also, the hand test works for some. If it's too hot hold there for 3 seconds, that's no good.

Not to worry, that is absolutely normal and even expected. It is water that has escaped through the hole in the pump housing where the drive shaft goes through. If that drain hole were not there, the water would rise up in the drive shaft isolation tube and possibly enter the powerhead's crankcase through the lower main bearing's seal. You certainly would NOT want that to happen!!

So, sleep well tonight, all is well and normal with your motor.

What river can you do that in? They all seem to be dammed up in NZ or low lying braided shingle or log filled?

Sorry to hear that. Come to Florida. We still have rivers. Here's the Withlacootchie:

EDIT: Actually, it isn't that blue.
That looks good, id like to go there one day, some of those bridges connecting the islands look like a great driving holiday too.
Most of our major rivers are dammed for power generation, a consequence of being nuclear free, it does mean there are more lakes for boating, but its very rare to get a non saltie here.
Theres a lot of jetboats to go up the shallow rivers, the first high speed jetboat was invented here apparently, with Hamilton jets still being the world leader in producing them. A lot of these braided rivers are only a few inches deep in places as they are very wide so definitely no room for a outboard leg hanging off the transom

That photo looks good, i havent being up that gorge, i live up in the far north and things are getting pretty mangrovey up here. I use to live in the far south and struggled to find a good river that didnt require a jet unit.

That skippers road brings back memories, thats nuts that someone would tow down there, theres hardly room for two vehicles to pass at the few passing areas
