Removing/installing Alpha One engine and drive, what special tools?

I'm getting ready to pull the engine on my boat, what tools do I need to complete the job? I know some "proper" tools can be substituted like a homemade gimbal bearing installer.

The plan is to rebuild the gimbal (bellows, bearing, all new cables, possibly steering pin, etc) and reseal the engine (oil pan, main seals, etc).

So far I have:

Hinge pin removal tool
Alignment tool

Besides the specific Merc tools, my shop is well equipped with a lift, engine hoist, air tools, jacks so no problem there.

To pull the engine, remove drive, 2 rear mount bolts, 4 front lag bolts, all hoses, wiring, cables and lift up and out.
A O/A torch too

Thanks. I have a O/A torch. As far as Mercruiser specific tools, I'm good with what I have?

whatever gimbal bearing installer you do use, make sure the driving force is on the tolerance ring and not the bearing itself

What about the shift cable tool or anything like that? I'm not going into the drive (thankfully) so it's just the gimbal area I'm concerned with.

If your just going to replace the gimbal there is no need to remove the engine

Yes, I know. But I'm resealing the engine amongst other things. Rehabbing the whole engine compartment. I just was wondering about a tool list specific for Mercruisers that I would need to have. Not meaning every "special tool" they list in the shop manual.

You will need a tool to expand the exhaust bellows. I made the $3 tool in the adults only thread and it worked great. If you don't have one already get one of the flex shafts for a screwdriver. It helps get to the U-joint bellows clamp.

Ayuh,.... The hinge pin tool ya got, ya don't need,... a 1/2" allen key, 'n abit of heat is all that's necessary,...

The alignment tool is a Must Have,...

For the cable, no special tools needed there, just plain ole hand tools will do,....

Is yer drive an Alpha 1, or an Alpha 1, Gen.II,.??

If it's a Gen.II, a can of Quicksilver Power Tune makes puttin' the lockin' ring into the bellows a 3 fingered job,...

Thanks for the info! It's an Alpha One MR.

Ayuh,.... Then a decent set of 1/4" drive extensions, wobblies, 'n a 5/16" socket are somethin' yer gonna want,...

For the band clamps, they gotta be Exactly as shown in the Merc Manual,... which can be found from Don'S Adults Only section at the top of this forum,...

I found it more efficient to trial fit all the transom parts and pay attention to the accesability to tighten the clamps during final assembly,it was my first transom job.

So far everything went well, got the bellhousing removed but had to make a deep 9/16 socket for the shift cable. I just cut a shallow socket in half and welded in a section of pipe.

Ayuh,.... Ya didn't need too,.... Just cut off the tag end of the old cable, 'n remove it,....

That little plastic piece, screws out of the new cable, no extra long socket necessary,....
Unscrew it, install the cable housin', screw it back in, feed the cable through,.....
