Should we have a category or type?

what i mean is like myself and others coming aboard in restoration job. it would be great having a section with the different boat types like CC, cruisers, tryhalls, walkarounds, etc..

or even maybe just the completed ones from beginning to the end so for Greenhorns like myself would at least have a template to follow. im not saying there is not the HUGE support from the PRO's but maybe it will give some extra confidence

just a thought maybe its not doable

I definitely dont want to offend anyone

I understand what you are saying almost like a sub category that is you searched center console only the cc would come up. I also like to learn from watching someone who is doing the same type of boat as me it seems easier to understand. On the other hand it might end up being more confusing with all the different types

Mentioned/suggested before, me included. Questions were asked prior to developing the newer forum....Does make a lot of sense but Oh well. Could actually start with current boat types as was suggested 3 yrs ago. Then a library would eventually develop and of course there would be all the past to access as is.
Now stop buckin the system!! lol.

I would not prefer categories for a couple of reasons. The type of boat doesn't really affect the nuts and bolts of the build.

There probably aren't any pilot house builds here period. But from the bass boat guys, cuddy cabin guys, bow rider guys, fishing boat guys, etc., I was able to learn some awesome tricks and techniques that helped me immensely and that I will apply for a lifetime. I think that our builds are too intermingled, and that's a good thing.

I also think we'd miss out on a lot of cool builds. Sometimes I follow because I like the boat, and sometimes because I like the person or the story behind the boat.

No time out Mike, this is just conversation. That being said I also like JC comments. See...just conversation.

And "Top Dogs" are the guys buying $250,000 CC Contenders that keep the marine industry growing for us little guys. That's a huge blessing as it makes getting into the game affordable when they throw their toys away ;)

I think I understand the request. However, I find it interesting to watch all types of projects even when they don't pertain to my project. WHY? because I get new and interesting ideas by seeing others work on their problem and issues and can transpose those ideas to my own project. It really doesn't matter if the project is a simple tin conversion or a top ocean going vessel. All problems and the way some folks find their fixes lends to more ideas for everybody. But that is just my opinion.

Just use tags, that's what they are there for. They are actually much more powerful than categories, because a topic could have multiple tags (eg: CC,outboard, fiberglass).

I think having the different restos in the same group is a good thing. First it means more people are able to brows through all the projects in one place making it easier to see who's actively working on their boats, and comment accordingly. Second having more people actively searching through the restos in one forum means more knowledge is out there potentially checking out your work. When I replaced the transom in my Starcraft this spring I posted my work in the resto forum instead of the Starcraft forum so I would get the most feedback, and could demonstrate the rebuild to as many as wanted to see it. Even though allot of the work I did only pertained to tin boats I still got lots of support from glass guys as well. Like was mentioned above we're all one big iboats family and some of us can use all the help we can get.

I frequent several forums, the ones that are divided up into small segments for each type of subject matter get less activity and it can be frustrating flipping through each category to see what's been posted recently. If the title of the thread doesn't interest me I don't click on it, but what does interest me can vary a great deal.

I agree that the format Iboats has currently is a very nice way to keep the conversation going but my suggestion was more along the lines when it completes because it gets lost... all that info and those tears, sweat, blood vanishes if you don"t type one of the tags.

thats all im saying keep eveything as is just maybe give us a chance also to lurn those ups and downs.

Any that does complete a project should ask a Mod to be added to the completed projects Topic Bondo referenced earlier. In their project Topic they should reference/link the completed project Topic and link back to the project Topic from the condensed completed project Topic.

The completed project Topic should have LOTS more entries, IMO...

I did my rebuild thread in the Starcraft forum as it is a pretty active forum and deals specifically with the brand of boat I was working on. My thought is tin, glass, and wood boats all have some areas that are unique and specific in their deconstruction and reconstruction. Upon completion of my project I condensed the build and it was placed in the Completed Boat Project section. It is a great place for those that completed a project to condense a thread with highlights of the build and then add a link to the original rebuild thread so a person is able to go see the entire build.

The Owner Groups by Manufacturer is quite large in sub forums that are mostly underutilized with only a few makes that I have seen are regularly used. With that said maybe it would be better to make 3 subsections in the Boat Restoration forums with a wood, glass, and tin sub forum.

for many reasons indicated, as well as the headache involved, we dont need separate forums. However what would accomplish the same thing seamlessly is additional meta data tags that are searchable. and that should be doable (with my limited understanding of V-buletin and SQL tables)

that way you can see every restoration, etc, or perform a search for a specific type of hull build.
