I need an old alpha lower unit drive shaft for setting the rolling torque for upper bearings.
Or any ideas on performing this task another way?
Has anyone ever fab'd a tool to perform this?

THanks for that, but I've already finished the DRIVE gear assembly. I'm at the DRIVEN gear assembly portion of the rebuild currently. The DRIVEN gear is the gear that sets vertically in the upper housing. The steps include information about using an "old drive shaft with the pinion nut installed" to set the rolling torque for the two bearing assemblies, one at the top, near the cover, and the other in the bottom where the drive shaft from the lower unit connects. The procedure requires you invert the upper housing once the assembly is installed and insert the "old drive shaft with the pinion nut installed" to turn the assembly with the IN_LB torque wrench.

As a non-expert on the Alpha, the drive shaft to be used is the one which was removed from your upper drive. Just install the nut so you can check perload

Actually, that's not correct. If you look at STEP 11 where it shows the image of the drive shaft, it lists: a - Gear Housing Drive Shaft.
The Gear Housing is the lower unit. The only item in the upper housing which has a nut on it is the yoke/bearings assembly which runs horizontally.

Agree my bad, mixed up the terms. Figure you have to use the shaft of the lower section in the upper to check preload.

I'll bow out and let the experts assist

Before I had an old shaft around, I welded a flat piece of thin steal (1/8") to a socket and filed it to fit into opposing grooves of the spline. You have to be careful to hold things straight but other than that it worked great.

AllDodge..Thank you for the effort...I just wanted to get some ideas on what other folks are using if they don't have the drive shaft to use. Wrench3..That's a great idea! That gets me thinking.....I wonder if I could use a piece of round, steel stock and weld a couple pieces of 1/8" steel in a cross pattern at one end and the socket on the other. Thanks a lot..

I must have seen that image once cause I did a version of that fish scale trick on my horizontal drive shaft when I reassembled it after putting in a new seal. (With apologies to my high school English teacher for the run on sentence.)
2 lbs at 3" equals 6 inch pounds.
Fish scale came from the back corner of Walmart.

Thanks everyone for the input. I think I may have hooked up with an guy in town which may have some beat up drives in the shed which I could probably get a drive shaft off of.
