I need to register a 1966 Lone Star Del Ray 15' boat I am buying from my neighbor. The boat has not been registered for at least 20 years. My neighbor has no paperwork on it. His brother in law bought it from his neighbor but never transferred the paperwork to the brother. Both previous owners are currently deceased.
How do I registser the boat?
I live in CT.

Just some thoughts...
It's a 66 so it does not require a HIN #,
Claim the boat as a rowboat that has never been registered?
Claim it as a gift?

I live in ND, Just had to register mine, checked with fish and game and all they need is a buy/sell agreement, and the $24, boats in ND dont require titles.

Call fish and game in your area and just ask them.

Good luck :)

if you can get him to write up the buy/sell as a gift and pay him cash you wouldnt have to pay sales tax.... i have to pay a whopping $25 to the state and its more of a pain to fill out the approprite paperwork

In CT?? Me too. I am planning on simply filling out the CT bill of sale and walking into the DMV. Check out the DMV web site, that's about all they say is needed.

Ooopps,.... Forgot that I also have a 15 yr old registration that I found in the boat, that will probably help me.

Per the link below it sounds pretty easy. Bill of Sale from previous owner, 6.35% sales tax, and signed affidavit that you are the legal owner.

I've been through it a couple of times here in PA; for an old and not expensive boat like you have the state doesn't seem to worry about it.

Went To the flotilla and asked what to do they said all I need is a bill of sale and a notarized doc saying I am the legal owner. But knowing the DMV I'll be missing something, so I'll bring every possible document that would apply for my situation.

Documents Required to Register a Boat in CT:

http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=817&q=245288

It does not matter how the other 49 states do it. The ONLY thing that matters is what is required in the state where you are registering the vessel.

The USCG is a Federal Agency and does not issue or enforce registrations.
