I have been trying to replace the alternator belt on my 1976 mercruser 165hp.I removed the two bolts, spacer and the water pump pulley but still cannot get the belt off the crank shaft pulley as there is not enough clearance between the pulley and the front mount.

:welcome: to iboats

The easiest way is to loosen the water pump pulley bolts enough to tilt the pulley or remove all bolts but one and move it out of the way

You may have to support the front of the engine, remove the bolts holding the front mount so you can tilt the mount out of the way. If you leave the drive on while doing it, only lift the engine up the absolute minimum you need to move the mount out of the way. And no more than 1/2"

I had a 165 and there was a small plate /section of the front plate that was removeable .The purpose of that was for replacing the belt.Take a real good look at that bracket.

I have already removed the water pump pulley and the spacer but cannot get the belt past the engine mount and the crankshaft pulley. I cannot lift the engine as it is in a 25ft cabin cruiser on the trailer.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Loosen, or remove the lag bolts in the base, 'n pry enough space to slip the old belt out, 'n the new one in,...

I have been working on this boat for a year now and about ready to go .It has twin 165hp engines and they do not have thermostats in them. Was told not to use thermostats in Lake Superior. Is that right? I would think they would run better with one.
