First time boat owner here. I have a 1988 cosair with a 2.3 omc cobra. It has sit for about 6 years and I got it running. Now I want to change the oil cause it needs it bad.
But how do I drain the oil with out dropping the oil in the bottom of the boat?
Where and what type of oil filter do I get?

Best oil? Iv read that 30w is the best to use.

If anyone one with any kind of info would be great. On oil change or anything I should do before I take it out on the water

Thanks

Welcome aboard Bakers.

For removing the oil, I use a pump like THESE. I have a manual one, but you can get 'em as fancy as you like. That's been the easiest way for me.

As far as oil and oil filter - pick your favorite and roll with it. There's roughly 1,000 people viewing the forums right now which means there's about 2,273 opinions on the best oil to use. When I get the stuff to change the oil on the cars, I grab an extra filter and a few quarts for the boat from the same shelves.

SAE 30 it typically referring to the gear lube for your stern drive.

Thanks For the tip on how to get the oil out. And is there a certain size and tread for the oil filter? Or is it if it fits it will work.?. I know the motor is the same as a 1988 ford ranger but can I use the same oil filter? As of now it has a OMC oil filter and I know they went out of business. I don't know where to start on buying one.

The oil should be removed at drain tube.
It looks like a garden hose end.The filter is easy take it off and see if the seal is at the edge(chevy) or on the inside by the threads(ford).
Then any auto parts store.
Look on the dipstick for the recommended oil. Sometimes it on the stick.
Most OMC filters were Chevy(I think).

SAE 30 is NOT for gear lube for your drive.

SAE 30 is the motor oil depending on your climate
oil filter dont cheap out here. the filter is more important than the oil. DONT BUY FRAM STP OR WALMART filters
stick with a wix or baldwin or mann filter ie. napa gold bosch mobil one filters

OMC never made engines. Neither did merc. they bought engines from car companies and modded them to spec. That being said, yes the filter from your ford ranger is the same as the filter on your boat.

Welcome to an oil thread

Short Answer is : yup.

My engine is a Chevy 250 I6. Same thing as was in Chevy's pickups in the early 70's. I find the oil filter based on that. OMC had a mix of Ford and Chevy engines, so a Ford wouldn't be unusual in there (I don't know the Cobras very well ... too new :D ). Like Jerry said, see the local auto parts dude for the oil filter.

Hey Baker. I have same engine and drive. Oil filter (Sierra part number) 187875. Fuel filter 187846. U will want to replace the points and condenser as well. Put a good quality marine gear oil in the drive. I like quicksilver high performance lube. Others will have there opinions I'm sure.
