I will be launching this weekend and I was wondering if there's anybody out there that has attempted this? I installed an electric fuel pump this past Spring and was wondering if I can remove the mechanical fuel pump with the boat in the water without removing the raw water pump? I know there is a fuel pump pushrod, Will there be enough room to remove the pushrod from my 1990 7.4 MerCruiser motor?

Your 7.4 uses a belt driven pump. The pump uses a cam lobe in side the housing, there is no rod to remove. All you will need to do after the pump is removed, check the gear lube inside the housing and make sure it is not diluted with gas. If it does have gas mixed in, drain and replace, or best bet just replace anyway, only a few ounces. Install a block off plate and gasket, then go boating

My fuel pump isn't belt driven, the raw water pump is though.

Sorry my bad, pulling the pump and removing the rod should be easy. Only issue is if there is something in the way to keep the rod from fully coming out. From the ones I have done the pump takes up more room then the rod when it comes out. The other side is "if" there is not enough room to remove the rod you can leave it and just cover the opening with the cover plate. The cam pushes the rod down, nothing brings it back up other then the full pump spring

Do you know how long the rod is?

Not exactly, but think no more then 5 inches, but it usually comes out only about an inch before clearing. The issue is even if it was left in, there would never be an issue. If you managed to bounce around enough for the rod to come back up and contact the cam lobe, it would just push it back down. The fuel pump rod comes up in the block a few inches, so in most cases it will clear just about the time it starts showing from the side of the block. Either way your ok

Ayuh,..... If it's a block mounted, cam driven fuel pump,....

If ya take the ole pump off, Ya need a Block-off plate to cover the hole, 'n keep the oil in,....

The rod will just fall down, 'n sit there, if not removed,... No danger there,....

Yeah I already have the block off plate. I was just wondering approximately how long it was.
