What is this?

Hey all, looking at an old used starcraft boat on CL and it has this motor. The current owners don't know anything (about it) they said they got the boat a couple months ago and it was too big for their lake, and never used it.

Anyway, it would be my first boat, and honestly it is cheap enough that I might take a chance. They said the motor turns over, but that is all they ever tried. So I am wondering if anyone could tell me ANYTHING about it? rough age? 2 stroke (I am assuming), good/bad/ugly/stay away, etc. I could not find any plates or anything on it with serials, etc.

For just the motor, or the whole thing? They want about that for the boat, motor, and trailer. The boat is an '67 starcraft holiday 18'

I kinda figured for the price it would be worth a shot not seeing it run, but didn't want to waste the money either.

Those were very popular motors. Based on the old 85/115 built in 1969. Many motor model were built from there. They do love to drink a lot of fuel though. For that big of a motor though, I would go with an I/O for better fuel economy.

Ga is right we do love our Starcrafts, but we're also cheap meaning we like bottom feeder prices on our tin if we can get it. I know the point of this thread was to ask about the engine, but had you posted this in the Starcraft section you might get more people posting to go ahead and pick it up; Depending on condition of the boat of course. Like Ga said post up some pics of the boat or a link to the cl ad so we can give a better opinion on the purchase.

i don't want to pay more, but I felt it wasn't a bad deal if it ran. The boat itself seemed to be in okay shape for being 45 years old, but I pretty much told them i was going to pass on it. More work than I am willing to do right now.

It doesn't look to be in too bad a condition. Heck, even the trailer appears to more than just serviceable.

I agree it does look like a good boat. What were they asking for her? These boats are pretty good platforms for just about everything from a fishing boat to a ski/cruising boat.

The configuration of the cowling looks to be a 1975. Looks like the basic 115 that year did not come with power trim. Looks like it's got both a throttle and shift cable going into the front of the engine. So, it's at least a 73. Those OMC engines were very popular back in those days. What will determine the engine's value is a compresson check. New, that engine would have over 125 lbs cranking compression on each hole. Back in those days, the hp was measured at the crank. Today it's measured at the prop. So you'd reduce hp by 10-12% to compare to modern-day outboards.

If that STARCRAFT was taken care of it would be an excellent project.----Had a ride in one couple of years ago after the owner did a complete refurbish.---Possibly better built than some of the new stuff !!

Should have the model and serial number on a round disk on the powerhead. If it is 1973 or newer, it will have the Mag CD ignition system (which is good). Of course, expect the usual stuff required to put a motor back in service after long storage. I wouldn't be afraid of it if it checks out ok.

Thank all, I scoured over the engine and couldn't find any tags or serial numbers or anything. A few things written in sharpie that were barely legible, but nothing beyond that at all. Really, everything seemed in pretty good shape for 45 years old, the trailer was serviceable, but needed a little tinkering. The rollers in the back were basically rusted in place, you could see a few of them weren't pivoting to fit the boat. But that is minor of course. The floor seemed solid, transom seemed solid, really if the motor ran, wouldn't have to touch it for a few years.

They were asking $800 for it, they said they bought it sight unseen, and said it was way to big for the lake they live on (plausible after seeing their "lake") said they backed in to the water once, tried firing it up, (turned over, but didn't start), then pulled it home.

As of right now, I think we decided to keep looking. I am a little nervous it is too big and would not work well on our boat lift, and how shallow the water is off our dock.

If I lived closer, I would be looking hard at her. How big is your boat lift? That boat is going to weigh a lot less than 1500lbs ready to go. And the draft is only about 2 ft to the bottom of the skeg, 30" max.

I am pretty sure it is an 1800lb vibo cantilever lift, and the water is about waist deep for about 1/4 mile out from the dock. 2.5-3', pure sand, no rocks or weeds, or anything like that. It is a larger lake, so I did want a larger boat, but just not sure if I want to take this on right now. This is about 2 hours away from me too, or I would ask them if I could take it to a shop to have it checked out first.
