I have some 12 ga. flares that are only a year old that were in a bag in my boat and the primers are really rusty.
obviously they are not to be trusted..........
When I buy new ones, how can I help keep them from rusting?
what can I coat the primers with?
thank as always!

Well if the primers are rusting, then it speaks to too much moisture and therefore the chemical composition of the flare itself could be compromised as well. I suggest you keep the flares in a sealed plastic bag with a packet of desiccant to help keep the flares dry... I've seen some priming issues (being a reloader myself) that used lacquer paint to seal them from moisture. A lot of foreign made ammo still does that. You could take some fingernail polish and paint it over the primers and bottom of the flare to help seal them as well...

I live on the Columbia River. I buy new flares every year and shoot the old ones off on the 4th of July. Great way to dispose of old flares.

And the city councils have not caught up with you yet?

LMAO

They just came up with a new set of rules in Vancouver, and of course Portland has been communist for years!

I do that every year, the boaters give the expired flares to me, and then we blow them along with the rest of the fireworks.
