Evinrude Power Trim Noise

Loud squealing noise when fully down until motor is switched off. Noise is somewhere in the pump area, not in the electric motor. Is it just the relief valve under the pump - or what is it? Also, when lowering, trim cylinders retract first, then the tilt cylinder --why? Aren't the trim cylinders supposed to retract last? 120 hp Evinrude 1990.

Trim rams should stay out until tilt is fully down, then they pull in slowly. When lifting, trim rams come out first then tilt takes over. If you've lifted fully then put on the lock then lowered the trim rams go in one at a time. So yes, it would appear there is a problem. Can't help you with what though.

The whole thing sounds normal to me. The squealing is normal if you keep the switch activated.

The tilt tube could need a good grease, if it's tight the trim rams would retract first.

T&Ts always make a different noise when the get to the end of their travel.

Yeah, but more of a slower motor/slightly louder pump whine noise.

I've got a 90 60 hp Johnson with freshly serviced hydraulics & a brand new replacement motor I put on at the end of last season & every once in a while, it seems like it's only after I've tilted the motor all the way up & go to put it back down the trim rams will retract first & then the tilt will go down & when the tilt ram is almost all the way down the trim rams will pop back out & catch the motor & take it on down like it's supposed to. I thought maybe a valve was getting sticky in there & causing it to act crazy every now & then or something??? It has only done it maybe 3 or 4 times in the last year & after it does that it will function flawlessly for some time.

Thanks All. This is with the T&T unit off the engine, so there is no engine weight to push the tilt cylinder down. It's pretty solid, though, pushing down by hand. Glad to know the squealing is normal if the switch is held on after everything is fully down. So you just have to trust the trim guage to show full-down and release the switch?
