Anyone have any advice or info on a 75hp 1975 Johnson stinger? I just bought a 75 starcraft ss that the motor is on. It started easy when cold, ran strong. I then restared it about 15 minutes after shut down it it fired off as sonn as I hit the key and sat there and idled. I guess I should replace the impeller as the PO said it was done about 4 years ago along with the thermostat. The tach is not working but he thought the gauge itself is bad. Can I install a temp gauge on this? Is there a way to put a tell tale on this motor? Anything else aside from lower oil change and some routine MTC I should do before running it. It will probably get winterized now as I doubt I will have time to get it on the water before the winter rolls around. Just thinking ahead for next spring. Thanks in advance.

A nice, high port, high rpm engine. 75 hp out of 49 cubic inches. Pretty slow out of the hole, but makes a lot of rpm's at WOT. 5750-5850 rpms. Prop it to run up to these rpm's. These worked well on really light hulls. You may find that you need two props. One for pulling skiers, another for top end.

Moving the tell tale was much more important on the 56 cubic inch blocks.

First I have to apologize, I fat fingered the keyboard in the title. It should say 1975. Is there a repair manual for these motors? An online copy or even a place to buy one? Thanks

The official site for original service manuals for OMC is: outboardbooks.com. Or you can call Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee direct. Don't settle for a substitute.

Thanks for the info. One other question, I'd like to winterize it this week. What is the right lube for the lower unit? I'm going to order a manual but want to get the wintetization done. Also I assume you pull the screw on the underside by the skeg and the fill screw, let it drain, then add fluid to the drain hole unti it comes out the fill hole? Thanks again

yes thats it, you need a fluid pump, mine cost like $5
i dont know the specs but most take less than a litre and most outboard and car parts place sell it, its basically gear oil for cars with more additives.
id check your hydrallic fluid too if you have a trim/tilt

You will need about 26 ounces of special marine grade gear lube, so buy a quart. You will need a marine gearcase lube. Bombardier makes good oil: HPF Pro or XR. Also good: Merc High Performance oil. 90 weight car oil won't cut it. You pump oil into the lower (drain) hole till it comes out the vent (the upper hole)
