While I don't have the transom out yet, it seems very sound. I'll replace it anyway just so i don't have to worry about it. Don't want this tower of Power to fall off. ha

Hmmmm, just a note here to make me remember. I have 2 sheets of cabinet grade birch ply in 3/4. If I use that and a piece of 1/8 hardwood sheet, I should be able to seal and use it for my transom. What do you think? I read in a thread that Barato2 did a test on it and it looked good. Do i need the 1/8? It seems most just use 2 pieces of 3/4, but some use a filler to get to the full width. I seem to remember there is still some extra room.

DPotter... I am working to replace my transom also. It's just my thought here, for my transom replacement I do not want any slop where my OB is mounted. Seems to me that of all places I want it to be rock solid...this is the place. My original transom was only 2 3/4" pieces of plywood (which had turned to pulp!) so I will just repeat what was there. If there is room for some reason I will fill it. Just my opinion here tho!

Get a good seal on that replacement transom board before you get it set and bolted back in....

Good point Frey. I went out and measured(photo). It looks like 1.5" will work but I'll fill if needed. I still need to finish my shop and carport so I can get it under cover and proceed with the tear down. I'm building the engine mount for the Merc on an automotive motor stand today. I need to build another free standing one for the Johnson I have also. right now it's setting on a HD saw horse I built some years ago.

Yup, your transom looks just like mine did, prior to tearing my apart. I would bet that you will be just fine with 1.5"....

At least I got the Johnson in before the snow flies. I'll check both it and the Merc out this winter. Leaning toward the Merc. Maybe I need another Tin boat. Oh and I know i still need walls. Ha, the carpenter is out sick.

Those bigger one you can massage a little with a block of wood and a rubber mallet, the one on the bow chin is going to be a real problem, that will take some real finesse.

Thanks Glen, My big concern is causing cracks or an aluminum section that flexes. I'll just work at them slowly. The rear should be easy once the splash panel is removed.

Yeah my transom replacement has been nothing short of a nightmare . I say that, but I knew it was weak, just was not aware of how weak it really was! I did get a full summer of boating in with it like that...scary really.

I am glad your is solid. I would replace it anyway since it is original to the boat.....and old!

Glad you got your motor in.....next comes the walls, then hull! Oh you will likely need lights and power too :wink-new:.

Well, i have one wall. Weather hasn't been cooperating. Can't hang tin in this wind.

Ok, I have walls, the last of the shop materials are here, the guys should have the insulation and OSB on the walls when I get back from a trip end of next week. Headed to Seattle to do a little work. I'll move the boat in to get started soon I hope.

. I've read many of the resto threads so I do have a question for you guys. I've seen many do new steering. Is the benefit of doing that really noticable? I had planned to keep the original.
