So rookie mistake today trying to separate lower unit from stern dive. Too much pressure on metal just above propeller cause the entire piece to break off. About. 5" piece. The front right entire corner if looking at if from the front. So do I need a new lower unit now or can I simply get by without too much performance loss from this piece of metal being broke off? Tried uploading photo with iPhone and forum said jpeg was an invalid pic format. Lol

Welcome aboard.

Which question are we supposed answer yes or no to? Get a new lower or run it as is.?

Click on the Forum Help link in the sig below and look at the attaching photos guide. Did you remove all the bolts, including the hidden bolt under anode fin?

Ok thx. Apologies for the poll. Not sure I meant to do that but, yes, should the lower unit be replaced or is it ok to use with the metal broken off the housing?

What AllDodge said. You have the broken piece, try a welder. A local boat dealer may be able to give a lead or two since lowers are always getting broken. Here is the big pic cuz I hate the itty bitty thumbnails.

since you have the piece, easy weld repair. even check your local radiator shop, most do aluminum welding for a reasonable cost.

I'm a rookie and when trying to separate I overlooked two hidden bolts and beat the hell out of it thinking it was seized. With the good advice on here I took it and had it welded back on for $65.
