Talking about Solid State Drives (SSD)

A Western Digital 480 Gig blue is 79.99 right now at Newegg, and I picked up this 480 gig SSD for 99 bucks, the gap is getting very small.

My DVR in the basement is a laptop with a SSD installed as the OS and app drive (running both Mythtv and Plex). I have 2 - 2TB drives hanging off that laptop for media storage. If the usb drive craps out its no biggie, I just restore my movie collection from the 1tb hanging on my router. I also have an intel NUC box with a small Msata drive that runs OpenELEC that is connected to my TV. The Intel NUC boots faster than any appleTV or Roku.

I have a toshiba laptop that I would love to upgrade to SSD for many reasons but I just hate to deal with the reinstall in Windows. It could use a fresh install though.

I just cloned my regular HD to the SSD and then swapped them out, never missed a beat, now my media computer has been upgraded to an 8 TB monster with a full raid back up system, so I won't loose any movies.

yep...no need to reinstall anything. Just make sure the contents of the drive you are cloning is smaller than the SSD and do what MtBoatguy did. The SSD comes with the tool. Also, I always save a clone of any new install of an OS so that if a hard drive ever dies, I don't have to go through a lengthy install process.

The drive doesn't have to be bigger then the one you clone to as long as the data size is not bigger then you new drive you are fine going smaller. When I setup multiple computers for a customer I setup one and then clone the rest. Last time I did it I cloned a 500gb to a 40gb drive to do the rest of them.

I can't believe the price of storage is so low. I picked up a 2tb usb drive for $69.99. I really want an SSD though. They boot so fast.

Perhaps my/the scheduled weekly system backups of SSD -->>> HDD will just sort of be hang'n around still and isn't necessary horrible idea anyway.

Although I have I think like four fans in this latest box, one of which is right at the front of the drive bay...........

This thread inspired me to go out an get a 480gb SSD and upgrade my laptop. Been thinking about it and this combined with the digital entitlement that came with the Windows 10 upgrade made it easy. I also purchased Office 2016 for $9.95 through an employee purchase plan. I am now on a totally clean build. So far so good. Everything seems to be working great.

Have upgraded several macs to SSD. Nice boost. Beware though. There is no warning when they fail. And they DO fail. Backup.

I know I am not a serious computer geek and since retiring, I honestly really don't keep up with the latest and greatest. But I presently have two laptops (one for the wifey and one for me) that have 300gb hard drives. And I know I have a lot of design output files and music stored on mine laptop (consistently back-upped) and out of the 300gb, I only have used about 35gb. So what do you guys have on your computers to need 1tb drives and large SSD drives? :noideas:

One of my puters has 8 TB storage and that is for my media/movie files that I record through a capture card, another computer is used for full system backs daily of my wife's internet business, another is my weather computer that stores up to 5 years worth of daily weather data, then another one I use quite often has all of the operating systems on it for every single Cisco Router and Switch they made in the last 20 years, the one I use on the internet all of the time for goofing around which is what I am typing on, has only a 500 gig drive in it, now a 480 gig SSD just replaced that, so I have a lot of storage for various things I do.

Most of my space is used up my videos but I also have copies of almost all version of microsoft windows and office saved in ISO format for my customers. It is all legit.

LOL ... I remember back in the days of SyQuest and Zip drives thinking, "Who the heck needs 100MB?"

I work in large graphic and 3D modeling files. Many of the files I work in are at least 400MB. I've got one that's 3GB in it's working layers right now.

All this talk about SSD has got me thinking about buying a 500 GB SSD for my mid-2009 MacBookPro. It has gotten a little sluggish with the latest OS X versions, so an SSD may put some life back into it.

I did a bit of research and was thinking about the Crucial MX200 500GB drive as a replacement to my 250 GB HDD, that is now 6+ years old. It has been a while since I had swapped out the drive on a Mac or a PC, but I think I can get a usb/sata cable and use 'Carbon Copy' to clone the HDD to the SDD then make the swap. Probably cost me $200 all said and done.

Next year . . . no more tuition payments for the kids, so I should be able to swing a new MacBookPro at that point and use the old one as a spare.

Well I guess I got my answers to the storage capacity question. WOW, I have virtually nothing on my computers but what absolute necessities for my needs. And being retired and now doing little design work, I just don't need anything bigger then I presently have. That's okay though!

Normally they do, but the one I bought was a "bulk" drive like they sell to manufactures, so just be aware that if you buy a bulk drive you will have to provide your own software and there are quite a few of them out there that is free for home use.

Most likely a slow CPU
