Fuel line and fuel filter questions.....

I have OMC 5.7 L GM and I cleaned out the screen filter in the carb (Rochester Quadrajet). The thing is, when this was done before the previous owner used a vice grip on the compression fitting that goes into the carb. He tore the hell out of it and I had to remove the carburetor to get it lose. The tube needs to be replaced and the compression fitting is in sorry shape. I managed to get it all together and tighten it up. It was leaking and I had to tighten it up real good. Now it does not leak but it would never come off with out removing the carb again. The screen has been cleaned last season and it had rust and other crude in it again when I clean it this time. The other filter is fairly new (canister by the fuel pump). My question is can I add an inline fuel filter from the hose that comes from the fuel tank and goes to the fuel pump? The hose that goes from the fuel pump to the carb is steel tubing so that won't work or will it? What if I cut the tube and ran rubber fuel hose up to the carb?

I have a canister filter but for some reason bits of rust and crude make it to the carb screen. I figure if I add an inline filter this will help prevent particles from getting to the carb screen. Whole point is because I do not want to remove that compression fitting from the carb again to clean the screen.

I guess most of you would say "easy solution, buy a new tube with new compression fittings". Problem is where would you find it? I do not have a flare kit to repair one I have.

I dont think that is something that is recommended with an i/o .How often do you change the fuel/water seperator??? That is what I would concentrate on.You should not have that kind of crud getting through the cannister.Charlie

Re: Fuel line and fuel filter questions.....

Thanks Charlie. Long story short. A marina last year accidentally did a "tune up" on my boat. There was another guy who had almost the identical boat as mine at the marina and his key fit my boat. They accidentally mistook my boat for his.

These guys are known scammers and prey on unknowing new comers to the lake. They said they changed my filters. I think they cleaned out the screen and that was it. They may not have even done that. Like I said, you have to remove the carb because its tight as hell. I believe they left the canister filter and just dumped the fuel and grit out of it and screwed it back on. Anyway, I will buy a new one just to be safe.

They also said they completely overhauled my carb. It was never touched. Glad I never paid them.

Don't cut into the fuel line between the fuel pump & carb.....It is a coast guard violation, and you will be ticketed if they board you...Not to mention that it would be dangerous....Replace them with oem parts....JK

Trying to picture what you have, you can fabricate that line with steel line from any NAPA or AUTO ZONE. At least I did on mine.

Re: Fuel line and fuel filter questions.....

i don'think putting a inline filter is acceptable. here are some rules about what is, and isn't acceptable. http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/boatbuilder/fuel/183-534.htm

i had a plastic fitting on my boat when i got it. it broke off. i had a bomb waiting to happen. hope this helps. not to mention it's interesting reading....
ps, i don't have plastic on it now....revamped the fuel lines and think i comply now... :)

Kagee....Brake line work? Some one told me you can bend it without the bending tools. I may just buy the flaring set and make my own.

I also read that this line has to be metal.

Yep, that's all it is. AUTO ZONE has a double flare kit you can use for free. Bending tools are not that expensive either.

Re: Fuel line and fuel filter questions.....

My 1975 225 OMC has had rubber hose from the fuel pump to the carburetor since I bought it 10 years or so ago, along with an in-line automotive-type fuel filter. I think I'll double check the numbers on the hose when I get home tonight. I believe that it had SAE ratings on the hose. If that is so, it sounds like I need to replace it with USCG type A1.
