I have a 19' Bayliner Capri Cuddy with a 5.0 Liter, V8 OMC cobra engine and Cobra outdrive. I can supply model numbers if necessary. The boat if from 1988 or 1989. Being my first year with this boat, I would like to know how to remove the outdrive to grease the gimbal bearing and universal joints. I have the 'owners-operator's manual and will be buying 2 different service manuals, one from West Marine and one from ebay. I was told by a helpful poster from another forum to simply lower the outdrive, remove the 6 nuts, and back the drive off. I was planning to leave the drive off until spring, storing it in my shop (heated). This also gives me enough time to find an alignment bar for the reinstallment in spring. My manual tells me to have the dealer remove the outdrive and realign the engine (if necessary). Is this something I can do myself, with a few helpers? Can I change the oil in the outdrive before removal? Can anyone post specific detailed instructions on how I might remove the out drive for winter??

On the "Other Board" you was told about 6 times to remove the 6 nuts and pull the pin holding the trim cylinders on. And you argued every step of the way.
What do you want to hear now?

Re: OMC Cobra outdrive removal help

The marine mechanic I hired to help me this Saturday advised me to post my question on this board. I even sent this exact post to him via email and he proof read it. He was nice enough to advise me to try this board before paying him to do the job. So much for kindness and saving money :( .

How many different ways can one say the following,
Remove the trim cylinder pin from the outdrive so the cylinders are not attached to the drive, and remove the 6 nuts holding the drive to the pivot housing. Then pull the drive off.

Don's right (as usual). That is the detailed removal instructions. I have the exact boat/drive combo as you do and that is all there is to it. Maybe two things worthy of noting, the trim pin goes through BOTH trim rod ends and the drive and loosens via two nuts, one on each side so you'll need two wrenches, but if you are a pretty good wrench this should be pretty obvious, and second the drive weighs abot 80 pounds and it might be a good idea to have a couple guys do the "pull the drive off" part. Options to this include screwing an threaded eye into the fill hole on the top of the drive and using a hoist or building one of the drive holders referenced else where in postings on this site.

Best thing you can do is get a hold of an OEM OMC manual (probably from eBay) it has very specific instructions and pictures on how to remove the drive. You should change the oil first while it's in the upright position.

The drive can be pulled in about the time it takes to read these posts and figure what's going on.
Pay the mechanic Saturday.Unless he has to go to you (boat at his shop),You have real problems if it takes more than 45 minutes.Real time is about 15 minutes.

DHP

http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=011664#000000

If you're gonna pull the drive regularly might want to consider building a holder for it. Can make it really easy to pull & replace (holder supports drive while you remove & put back). Several designs in the above post. If the drive slides out easily you may not need an alignment bar. Mine ('89 4.3L Cobra) goes in easily without needing the alignment bar.

most likley wont need the alignment bar IF you dont move the engine with the drive off. Move the engine and you will need to reset the alignment.
