I have a 1983 Johnson 15hp model J15RCTA. I was given the motor from a friend. I found that the top spark plug was wiggly with oil on that part of the motor and on the inside cover meaning the motor was getting blow by. I am a newby to motors. I used a Heli Coil spark plug repair kit. The new collar and plug are in place but the plug is about one thread off perpendicular but is torqued down properly. I also had to shave off part of a nubbin inside the top of the cylinder head because of the length of the tap. See pic. Are these two issues a big problem or do I start the motor to find out? Nervous. Please help.

Welcome aboard, always nice to meet a new member. But we need pictures of what you're talking about to form an opinion.

I think as long as the reach is OK after your fix, I might give it a try. Resurface the head if you reinstall to correct warping.

If you get a new head, I would consider one from a later model (maybe a '90/'91 -- '89?) Get one with the t.stat up at the top.

I'm worried that he is saying that the insert is not going in flush with the outside. If the spark plug doesn't seat properly to the head it will overheat and burn a hole in the piston.

^^reasonable concern. I'm hearing the plug is flush and torqued down OK, but very slightly angled.
