safe to use penetrating oil on prop shaft?

Right idea. Try tapping the body of the prop with a hammer (not the steel type) while there is pressure on it. If that doesn't work your going to have to heat it.
That prop is around 750.00

yea these props are big $ unfortunately. Heat, or a torch will be last resort. Has anyone tried Volvo's prop puller? Its a nice quick tool and heavier duty than my puller in the photo. Its, of course over priced at $200+ but its very tempting at this point. Theres a video of it and the guy literally gets a frozen prop off in under a minute.

You should be able to feed those cables through the usable gap at the back of each prop and through the exhaust holes. Not just in the holes like you have it. Your going to snap them off that way
That tool (volvo penta prop removal tool ) only has a load limit of around 150lbs. It still might not be enough to get it off.

5 Ton Three Jaw Hydraulic Gear Puller at harbor Freight
make sure every loop is the same size or the puller will not be align with the prop shaft.
Remove the jaws and attachments and attach the wires to the holes in the puller

could that gear puller do any damage to the prop shaft? if not that looks like the way to go. I have friends that work as mechanics so I may be able to borrow one. In the mean time i'm going to keep spraying. Is there a best spray oil for frozen props. I'm thinking of trying some seafoam or maybe a few drops of transmission fluid. I'm guessing the dried up grease in there is preventing the penetrating oil from doing anything..But there's gotta be something out there that'll breakdown that dried up grease.

I have a chain puller(homemade) it has the 3/4 blade puller without the arms.
​I replaced with 3 pieces of chain.
Loop the chain over the blades and tighten then wrap a strap around the chains and tighten and the prop should pull off.

Next visit to HF that hyd.puller is mine!!

I made a homemade nut tool by using a piece of pipe. Think it was 1.5" (just large enough to get around round part of prop nut). Cut slots into end to align with the 3 notches so it slips through around depth of nut. Then get a pipe wrench and twist it off.
Has always worked and never failed me....good luck!

He can get the nut off. He needs to slide the prop off.

I can't believe there's not just a drain bolt on the bottom to drain the oil. I think I'd put it all back together and throw a for sale sign on her. And get somthing that's simpler to service.

Agreed. My props come off every year when I change my gear oil.

I hope everyone learns from this thread that the prop needs to be removed annually and greased even if you don't need to take it off to change the gear oil.

Should be pulling the drive annually as well!

. Lol. He said in post# 20 all he wanted was to change the gear oil. So it had me thinking the drain bolt was behind the prop. On his model. But yea I understand now. Just trying to get it off to grease the splines. To prevent prop sezing on the drive shaft.

It is behind the prop.

His point is that since you replace the gear oil annually, it should never be an issue since you should be pulling the props annually as well.

I just bought the boat about a month ago from a dealer so i'm not exactly sure when the last time the gear oil was changed. The boat only has 41 hours computer-confirmed. Oil looks clean and smells fine, no water. I didn't know if gear oil has a lifespan in terms of age/time? Either way whether I change the oil now or in the fall, I gotta get this prop off! I think a gear puller is next on the list..keep you guys updated and thanks for all your suggestions..

I actually don't think that was why they did it. I think it is was a design issue to get all the gear oil out.

Umm is this twin prop set up. Significantly better than single prop. Performance wise. Or is it designd for something in particular. ?
