Im just about ready to test out my johnson 50hp Ive been working on for 4 months, I asked some questions in a previous thread with no response. Id figure id ask them again here. How would I stop the flywheel from moving when I am tourqueing the nut? I was thinking putting it in gear and putting a block of wood under the prop? Also, because I honed and added new rings, will I need to run on more oil at first? break in period?

or you can use a strap wrench from Harbor Freight.

As for more Oil, I don't think so.

The tools WOG pictured should work to hold the flywheel.

As far extra oil, with new rings I would think the motor will need to be broken in, That usually means more oil.

I don't what the break in procedure or time is for a Jonny.

New rings means full break in procedure. with double oil(24:1) for the first 10 hours

First 10 - 15 minutes in gear at a fast idle. For the remainder of the first hour bring boat onto plane, using full throttle, then reduce speed to about 3000 -3500, keeping the boat on plane. Vary the speed a bit but not exceeding 3500. For the second hour, bring the boat onto plane and reduce speed to about 4000 - 4500. every 10 minutes run the engine at full throttle for 1 - 2 minutes then return to 4000 - 4500. For the remaining 8 hrs do not operate at full throttle for extended periods.

The main thing is to vary the rpms and don't run at any particular speed for extending times.

Also when I took off the flywheel, I noticed that I can see the rollers on the upper bearing, is there supposed to be a seal here?

I think I forgot to include the upper crank seal when I put the crank back together, I know I replaced the bottom one but looking at the diagrams I forgot to, would I need to take the crank apart again to fix this? :faint2::faint2::faint2:

No Title

You can install the seal without dis-assembly. Might need to improvise some sort of driver.

You can make your own strap wrench for holding the flywheel at little or no cost. You need a stick of wood and a piece of nylon strap and a few nails. Nail the strap to the wood and you have just created a tool.

The seal fits in the bearing.------And yes it will go on backwards.-----------Nothing you can do but to take it apart to inspect / correct this !

Im going to have a great time today then! :grumpy::grumpy::grumpy::grumpy::grumpy::mad-new::mad-new::mad-new:!:blue:! Il just have to deal with. My plan will be to unbolt the whole powerhead, lift it out. replace the seal and flip the bearing and then put everything back together. Questions.

- Do I need new sealant for the two part powerhead? or the same sealant and spaghetti seal?
- Do I have to take the lower unit off to do this?
- WHen I get the bearing off, is it just a matter of punching it out? or is it more difficult than that...?

At least you noticed your error before you ran the engine
