Help with engine swap? If possible? Take out OMC and put in Mercruiser

Hey Everyone... Have a quick question to ask.. I have a chance to get a 16' Capri bayliner. Mid 80's It had a OMC 2.3 i/o in it. I have my Mercruiser 120 and I was hoping to put it in there. Is this doable? I think I have to replace my transom in my Grew so I figured since I have the engine pulled why not put it in this boat for the summer so I can still have some fun on the lake..

Is there a lot of modifying to do? Pretty straight forward swap?

Please let me know as I am thinking of picking up the boat tomorrow.... If I can't, I guess I would have seats, dash, steering wheel and stuff for my boat.... And the price I am getting this one for is pretty cheap because of no motor in it.

Thanks

Dezi

Ayuh,.... The transom cut-out is the same,....

Going to take a look at that first before I decide on anything. Nice thing is the seats are in good shape, nice dash with all the gauges, steering wheel and updated shifter with trim tilt in the shifter.

I do like my grew because it is a bit bigger and deeper and I figure it would be better on rougher water over the Capri no?

So if the transom is ok in the Capri, I may run my motor in it for the summer while I replace the transom on the grew. Dunno. Lots of decisions.

Transom is in good shape by the looks of it. I will drill some holes this weekend and check it out.

Will I have to change out the shift cables? Or can the ones be adapted? I know wiring isn't going to be the same but we re wired the motor in the grew already so the that won't be a problem.

Got a chance to take a look at the transom on the Capri. Looks to be very solid inside and out. When I pull the motor I will get a better look and do some test drilling..

As for the engine swap, Is it hard to do? Looks pretty straight forward to me.. I was wondering what seals / kits I should be getting so I am ready to do the change out smoothly on a weekend and not have to worry about running out to get parts.... I already did the waterpump kit.. There has to be more gaskets, seals, bushings, etc. that I should be replacing while I have the assembly out right?

Thanks everyone :)

It's pretty easy, I swapped an '87 460 King Kobra out for a '97 7.4L//Bravo III (had to drill a couple of extra holes for the Bravo transom mount....The Alpha matches the Cobra.)

I would pull the riser and replace the gasket as a minimum (unless you KNOW it was done)

You may have to relocate the front engine mount a little if it doesn't line up.

You might want to clean up the engine compartment too. I did a bunch of re-glassing and re-painting in my engine compartment........

Thanks :) I was hoping it to be not too hard.. I got lot's of room to work in there... Once the OMC i pulled I want to clean it up really good and do any fixing etc. in the bilge area. Put some new paint on in there.

I would highly recommend Sherwin Williams Macropoxy. A glass guy on OSO recommended it when I was rebuilding my Formula, Its epoxy and nothing effects it. Had a little gas leak on the new motor (long story) and there was no effect. Comes as 2 parts mixed equally, cost is a bit higher. A two gallon kit cost about $100

I got lots of gel coat and epoxy resin at work :). Will have that part covered. And the boss said I can use the forklift when I'm ready to pull the engine. Woot woot!
