A buddy of mine has a boat that HAD a Johnson 140 model #J140TLCRD and he's replacing it with an Evinrude 140943R. My searches indicate the Johnson was a 1984, which I believe is the same as year of boat and that the Evinrude he bought to replace it with is a 1979.

The Johnson basically got shelled when it lost a ring, but on tear down we labeled everything, because we were hoping to salvage it. He came across what he;'s hoping was a good deal on the Evinrude, so he picked it up and so far he has it mounted on the boat and has been hooking up the electrics. Supposedly he heard it run before buying, but he's eager to compression test it and so forth. The problem is there is a 5 pin wire harness coming from the boat side that he can't find a place for it on the Envinrude engine. We had labeled it 'C' on tear down, so I told him to find his old parts and see what is labeled 'C'....he says it's a power pack or something. He's supposed to bring it over later, but until that time....does anyone have any idea what he should do with this wire if there is no where to hook it up? I stopped and looked at it and it comes in with all the other harness wires and stretches back towards the rear of the powerhead. I've looked through pics I took when I helped him strip the Johnson down, but so far I'm not sure what plug I'm looking for.

At this point he's planning on using the Johnson Controls, is that possible? Any clue what might have been on a 1984 Johnson 140hp that wasn't on a 1979 Evinrude 140hp.

Any suggestions going forward?

Everything should be the same.----Except for the wiring for the power trim and tilt.-----I will repeat , everything should be the same and an easy retrofit.

One would think it would be easy, but he's not a mechanic and trying to rush things in my opinion. With that said the part the 5 wires go to has a green, green with white and red wire amongst a few other wires. Those wires go to a terminal block and there are two 'relays' in the box. I've looked quickly at online diagrams and haven't found the right one. I want to say it's a power pack but not sure if that's right.
I'm thinking it's either choke relay or tilt that it's in the box and the diagrams are showing different colors of wire.

Slow down for sure....This should pretty much be a direct swap.
Post some pics of this 5 wire harness and we can probably point you in the right direction.

I'll try to get pics up when I'm on pc. Can't seem to get uploaded from my phone to the site. I'm trying to slow him down because I've been busy....

Those are the wires for the trim / tilt system !----Not the powerpacks.

The 79 power trim system used a 3-wire motor. Also, had a control box which was on it's own control cable-the control box was mounted separate from the engine. Usually mounted under the rear splashwell and got it's power direct from the battery. The 84 trim motor was a two-wire motor. The control box is the new style, mounting on the back of the exhaust manifold, inside the cowling. It got it's power from the main wire harness of the engine. None of the trim parts are interchangeable between the two systems. Yet both systems work well and are reliable.

Well isn't that fun....the trim wire on the 79 motor was cut where it exited the cowling and I'm pretty certain he doesn't have the 79 control box. Now to figure out how to get that part or make what he has work. Wonder if he could Tegan the 79 on the 84 tilt/trim system....
