Hi guys, I got a1996 mercury 115 outboard. The ignition switch broke and now I'm trying to set it up as a toggle switch and push button for the starter. I got the starter working but can get the ruin poison figured out. What wires have to be connected to have the ignition on Run.

With most outboards, nothing connected is run position. One wire should be ground, the other goes to the ignition as a "kill" in the off position

:welcome: gorilladk2277 to iboats. Nice to have you aboard...

Whatever you decide, make sure you have a kill switch setup so if you get thrown from the boat, it doesn't circle around and run over you. You wouldn't be the first person to have that happen. But it could be your last time all the same. JMHO!

Thats what i thought. This is the problem. everything was working fine and the the ignition switch fell apart and cant be put back together. So i just wanted to hook evey thing up to switches. i got the starter to work no problem but im not geting any spark. What should i do?

could the kill switch be bad? Where would it be located on this engine. i cant seem to get anything ont the net about it. the lynard style swith keeps coming up, but this motor dosnt have that. the switch on this is located somewhere on the engine. but i don't know what it looks like to find it and the wire is imposible to follow.

It would be a big red button on the outside of the lower cowl. Your motor wouldn't have an engine mounted kill.

So you will have a switch for OFF-RUN and a push button for START. How about the choke/primer? You are now looking at three switches and with simple switches you leave the boat ripe for theft. Why not just replace the key switch. These are readily available and are not budget busters.

I forgot about the choke. Agreed, new key switch would be least expensive and easiest.
