Hello everyone, My first post and new here. I own this boat about a year now with 1984 jonhson 50hp and since i have it day one the motor idle very low and each time i put it in gear the motor would stalled. so i have to rev it up and let it wine down to where it low enough that i engage the gear without put a lot of load on the lower unit. and last week i'm the lake and i'm having a hard time to get it start it but when i do the idle is low i have to rev it up once i get going it run fine. and when i goes through the channel it would die because of low RPM possible timing issue. so i start to play around with the throttle linkage, but couldn't get the idle high enough then i start to play the yoke (the nylon piece) bump up the idle speed a bit, now at low speed the motor stay run but when i put to WOT the would bog and stall seen like timing is off or it starving for something. but if i slowly went to WOT it bog and slowly plain out and WOT fine and run great again. there are something wrong or timing issue at low RPM/speed. maybe some can help with link and sync info on the throttle linkage, shift linkage and yoke adjustment/distance and possible the step to do timing. i don't have the manual at the moment and would gladly appreciated.

all those linkages are closely related, many steps in link-n-sync, best to get a manual, also do a compression test, just to confirm thing are good in there.

now it bogs going to wot, sounds like carbs are opening before timing advances. link-n-sync!

Do a search on here for link n sync or idle adjustment. I know it has been covered a lot. If not I will put something together. I have basically the same engine

Unhook your throttle cable from the engine. If the double lines on the throttle advance plate line up with the roller then put your cable back on and adjust it to there. When is the last time the carbs have been cleaned. You might have a little crud in a low speed jet that is causing it too. I have an '82 50hp on my pontoon and it will idle all day in gear and not die.

Thank again for the reply i have been busy and i have been searching up until now and have been tried many method to sync and even try to adjust the low speed idle on the carb. i think i have made it a lot worse now. i have not try to clean the carb yet. for now i can't even get it to idle i have unlock the throttle cable from the motor to find the neutral, but the only time it would stay running when it in WOT I have play around with the nylo piece for the cam and it was a big dumb mistake. in the attachment is picture of current situation on my motor and it is in neutral as im taking the picture. and on the last picture can you help measure the distance at least i can get it as close to how you have your and hopefully get it to stay idle again. m2.jpg
