I have a 1978 85hp evinrude, model number 85895C, that does not have t/t. I can get a 1976 johnson javelin that has t/t on it very reasonably. No model number for it yet. I have checked two sources to see if the '76 t/t will fit my '78 and am getting conflicting information. One place says it will fit and another says it won't. My experience with this mid to late '70 engines is not much changed but I can usually match up the numbers. Any expert help would be appreciated.

You've got apples and oranges here. Completely different systems. The 76 engine uses two tilt cylinders that mount outside the swivel bracket. In model year 77, the 140 hp V4 engine got the first of the new style trim system and by the 78 model year all V4 models used the newer trim system. (all the cylinders hide inside the two transom brackets.) They are not compatible. You can scan through the factory parts lists and see for yourself: epc.brp.com

That is exactly what I needed to know! Thanks. Still love this forum after all these years.

Can you tell me what years will work? 1978 through ?

78 through early 90s will fit your motor. But the early ones used a 2 wire motor and the later used a 3 wire motor. If you are looking for a complete set-up for your motor make sure you get the relays with it. The 3 wire motor is more common because it was produced much longer.

Actually, when the new trim system was first introduced on the 77 140, it was a 3-wire system, requiring a control box which generally was mounted under the rear deck splashwell. About mid year 1981, OMC changed everything to the two wire system, and the control box was remounted to the rear exhaust cover (manifold) inside the engine cowling. The 2-wire system is the longer-running version.

My '82 V4 is a 2 wire with the relay box mounted inboard. This box has two cube relays like a German car style. The older 3 wire had a huge relay/solenoid for the up mode only. If I could find the parts I'd switch mine to the under-hood and clean up my wiring a bit.

Didn't OMC put a motor mounted TnT switch in at some point?

Thank you for the correction I switched the 2 and 3 wire systems around. Do what he said

By 1989 OMC had put an external trim switch on the lower engine cowling pan. Approximately...

I actually have a three wire with relays. going to two wire would not be that big of a deal. I have found three model numbers that I think will work. can anyone (emdsapmgr) tell me if I'm right? they are 0389887
0389358
0391013
0435946

Thanks again.
