I bought a 1977 mark twain with an inline 6. The guy just had carb built, it grinds going in gear. Sometimes it won't go in reverse. Could the idle be the problem? Do I need to adjust he cable? Any thoughts on where to start? It does sound like it's idling too high.

:welcome: samton to iboats. Always glad to have a new iboater join us...

Without being there and hearing or seeing the engine run, it does sound like one of few possibilities. First, it could be the idle RPMs are to high. Second, it could be the clutch dog and gears are shot, needing replaced. Third, it could be cable adjustments. But again without being there, those are only guesses. JMHO

Shifting that motor needs to be done with a quick / firm motion.----------No " granny shifting "is allowed.-----------Many folks mistakingly think that easing it into gear is easy on the components.

Thanks glad to be here. I didn't mention he put new bearings in the foot also. I ran it yesterday and now it will not go in reverse ar all. I guess I'll start with the carb it will be easier. Thanks

Well you can start with whatever you like, it is your boat. But what does the carb have to do with grinding going into gears and the lack of reverse? :noidea:

you do realize that it has no clutch its a direct drive and should be put into gear with a quick motion, a slow motion will grind it hard

Not wanting to talk out of turn and risk a court-martial, but I guess the Fleet Admiral gm280 was wondering why you're going to mess with the carbs to adjust your idle speed. At least I am because normally your ignition timing sets the idle speed, not the fuel air mixture.

I don't know the specs for your engine but I would just back off the idle timing until you hit about 700 RPM (with boat in water in fwd gear). That would be around about 800 on muffs.

If that don't help then try adjusting the cables.

If you already messed with the carbs you should find out what the initial settings should be and go back to them (probably about 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated), then fine tune again.

Top tip - getting a service manual for your motor would be the best tool you ever bought and a great investment.
