Hi
For the last 6 months, I have been refurbishing my old flat bottom jon/bass boat conversion. I finally got to the engine. After removing both carbs and giving them a good cleaning, I tried starting the engine. I made sure that the cylinders were lubricated before starting. I got it running. It will not idle though. I looked at the ignition switch box and noticed that one of the wires was corroded and broken. I traced the wiring under the top carb and up to where it disappeared under the flywheel. It looks like the wiring connects to the stator. I thought I could splice the wire but it was too corroded. My question is two parts. Would the broken wire cause the engine to not idle? It appears to relay to another wire that carries voltage to the top sparkplug wire. Also, will I probably need to replace the stator? I haven't removed the flywheel yet to get a look. I need to find a wheel puller.

Thanks.

Original wiring on that old of an outboard is questionable at least. Suggest you get a manual with wiring diagram, suitable wire and connectors and rewire. That surely will save you a lot of time down the road where the wiring problems nickel and dime you to death till you are sick of them and the engine.

Thanks for the reply. I have ordered a new stator. In the meantime, I have also ordered an impeller kit.
